2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid: An Icon, Reimagined

Mention the Toyota Camry name and our minds are rapidly plugged with perceptions of reliability, longevity and comfort. Such is the synonymity of the heralded nameplate and dependability.

The Camry’s bulletproof reputation was built over decades and has seen its seat at the family sedan table cemented. The Camry serves as the quiet benchmark of the automotive world with a ‘set it and forget it’ no fuss motoring experience.

Nonetheless, this notion has rather unfairly smothered the Camry under a monotonous blanket. Dependability does often overshadow flair, but in the true Toyota way, the Camry has gradually evolved rather than revolved into a stylish and sophisticated family sedan without sacrificing its reputation and identity.

It achieves this by seamlessly weaving design, technology and allure into the fabric of reliability it has worn for decades to remain relevant in a competitive D-segment.

The result is the ninth-generation Toyota Camry Hybrid Electric. As the name suggests, it combines internal combustion and electrical propulsion to take you the extra mile in the utmost comfort.

We might recall many things about a Camry, but you will not be faulted if its engine is not one of them. However, it is not due to a lack of remarkability, but instead how perfectly engineered it is that there requires no need to ever worry about it.

In the latest iteration, the very same applies. Beating under the hood is a 2.5-litre Dynamic Force A25A-FXS Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine making 186 hp and 221 Nm of torque on its own. Whirring along silently next to it is a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 136 HP and 208 Nm of instant torque. Completing the powertrain package is the lithium-ion battery and an e-CVT.

Combined, the entire system makes a stout 230 hp, enough to propel the sedan through the century sprint in just 7.2 seconds. However, that figure is not its most impressive. That accolade falls onto its official range of an astounding 1,250 km from a full tank, returning a rated fuel consumption figure of just 25 km/l.

Further allowing the driver to maximise the drivetrain’s potential are three driving modes, complemented by an EV mode that runs purely on the electric motor for short distances. Adding an electric motor to the mix brings instant torque to the table, elevating the Camry Hybrid’s driving experience whilst also introducing a sustainable element into an already accomplished vehicle.

Nonetheless, what fun would all that function be without some form for company? While previous iterations of the Camry would not be fodder for nightmares, it was not exactly going to potter on home with the Prom King title as well.

Granted, engineering the reliability expected of a Camry would take precedence over design but this time around, Toyota has successfully introduced styling into conversations surrounding the Camry Hybrid.

Spearheading the styling is Toyota’s new ‘Hammerhead’ design language. It pushes the sleek headlights out to the corners with a slim upper grille and a wider lower piece to project an imposing yet understated appearance, given that the Camry needs to look at home in a luxury hotel lobby as it does in a shopping mall’s car park.

The updates in styling has shaved years off the previously mundane looks and would definitely boost its appeal to a younger generation of buyers, expanding its desirability over a wider spectrum of buyers.

Positioned as Toyota’s flagship in Malaysia mandates a certain number of luxuries. In this sense, the Camry does not disappoint. The equipment list reads impressively, starting with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a nine-speaker JBL sound system with a subwoofer and amplifier.

The driver receives vehicular information via a 12.3-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster and a head-up display, ventilated front seats with eight-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat and two memory settings, power-adjustable reach and rake for the steering wheel and a large panoramic sunroof.

Furthermore, there is a tri-zone climate control, 15W wireless charging pad, USB-C charging ports, and for the rear seats, rear (powered) and side sunshades, plus the power-reclining rear seats controlled via a touch panel within the centre armrest. Completing the luxurious amenities is the iconic ‘boss switch’ on the side of the front passenger seat to push it forward for the Datuks to stretch out on long drives.

Equipment is not restricted to just luxurious features, it also includes safety. In this aspect, there are seven airbags, a panoramic view monitor and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 that operates on a camera and millimetre-wave radar sensor. Driver assistance systems comprise ACC, AEB, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, blind spot monitor, safe exit assist and auto high beam.

By gradually improving it over the generations, Toyota has once again redefined what a family sedan is. Combining an efficient yet powerful drivetrain with luxurious features and striking good looks, not to mention comfort and safety, there is nothing the Camry cannot do that a modern family would ask of it.

It has transformed from a car you need, into a car you want, simultaneously positioning it as all the car you would ever need.
