BYD Sime Motors to preview Shark 6 this weekend – PHEV pickup coming to Malaysia soon?

The BYD Shark 6 pickup truck could soon be launching in Malaysia, if a teaser post by BYD Sime Motors is anything to go by. A photo post on its Facebook page shows off a silhouette of a pickup truck, which will be showcased at the upcoming BYD Tech Discovery Event at Plaza Arkadia this weekend. No guessing is required here, as the Shark 6 is the only pickup truck model in BYD’s global vehicle lineup.

This teaser aligns with previous statements from BYD Malaysia Managing Director, Eagle Zhao, who confirmed that a model viability study for the Shark 6 is already underway for our market.

The introduction of the BYD Shark 6 in Malaysia will be particularly noteworthy, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the model’s footing in the region. In August 2025, BYD pulled the plug on the model’s planned launch in Thailand due to low demand, having received only 153 orders against an initial target of 500 units.

If the BYD Shark 6 does indeed launch in Malaysia, it would be the first pickup truck to be offered with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in the local market, provided it is launched before the PHEV variant of the JAC T9, which was also teased for the local market.

Furthermore, the Shark 6’s launch would signify a major strategic shift for BYD Malaysia. It would be the first model in the marque’s local lineup to feature an engine that consumes dinosaur juice with the debut of the marque’s Dual Mode hybrid powertrain for the Malaysian market – albeit in a specialised off-road configuration, known as the Dual Mode Offroad (DMO).

This DMO setup comprises a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine alongside two electric motors, producing a combined output of 436 hp (321 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. This enables a brisk 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds, with fuel consumption rated as low as 2.0L/100km with a fully charged battery.

Equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery, the BYD Shark 6 can travel 100 km (NEDC) on pure electricity and has a combined range of 800 km. Charging is supported with 7 kW AC, which takes two hours for a 30-80% recharge. The 55 kW DC charging allows the battery to go from 30-80% in 25 minutes.

As for styling, the BYD Shark 6’s exterior bears a noticeable resemblance to a particular American pickup truck, particularly its front fascia. Beyond this, the Shark 6 features the rugged, utilitarian profile expected of a modern pickup truck.

The BYD Shark 6’s interior mirrors its rugged exterior styling, featuring a rotating 15.6-inch centre infotainment display paired with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. Creature comforts on the Australian-spec model include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, black faux leather upholstery, and a comprehensive suite of ADAS features.

Its arrival to Malaysia still remains unconfirmed for now, but would Malaysians welcome the PHEV pickup truck like the Australians did, who famously crashed the booking site at launch due to overwhelming demand?
