All-new MG4 detailed in China ahead of launch — world’s first production EV with semi-solid-state battery

MG Motor has finally unveiled the all-new MG4 electric SUV in all of its glory, ahead of its pre-sale on August 5 and the official launch in China expected in early September. Show units have already been spotted at dealerships and exhibitions across its home country, offering a clearer picture of what to expect from the next-generation MG4.

Having debuted earlier this year, the all-new MG4 sports a rounder design in contrast to the sharp and edgy look of its predecessor. The front bumper is now cleaner and simplified, while the rear sees a full-width lightbar with MG signature arrow taillights at the flank. Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, the MG4 has also grown in size compared to its predecessor, which gives way to more interior space.

Speaking of which, this unveiling marks the first time MG has shown off the MG4’s interior. It now sports a cleaner and modern interior design with an intelligent infotainment system co-developed with mobile phone company Oppo, according to CarNewsChina. It features a 15.6-inch floating central infotainment display powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, in place of the old smaller display that was integrated onto the dashboard of its predecessor.

The system supports AI-powered interaction and includes other features such as cross-platform connectivity, smartphone-based vehicle control, gesture-based navigation, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The interior is also available with two two-tone colour options consisting of Rose Purple and Mountain Blue. The “Swan Wing” interior design philosophy incorporates low-saturation tones, simplified designs, and soft-touch surfaces.

Up front, the all-new MG4 features heated and ventilated seats with extended cushions designed to enhance long-distance comfort. At the rear, the seats also have longer cushions, can recline up to 27 degrees, and fold in a 60:40 split for flexible cargo space. Paired with a fully flat floor and reportedly more legroom than its predecessor, higher trim levels also come with a panoramic sunroof and integrated sunshade.

The all-new MG4 is powered by a single rear-mounted motor producing 163 hp. Unlike the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing earlier this year that saw the car featuring a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the all-new MG4 will instead feature a semi-solid-state 70 kWh battery, as confirmed by MG General Manager Chen Cui, making it the first mass-production vehicle in the world to feature a battery of such.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, offering higher energy density, longer lifespan, and improved safety. Semi-solid-state batteries, as its name suggests, utilises a mix of both, with the unit in the MG4 containing just 5% liquid electrolyte, well within the conventional 10% limit for the category.

MG says the semi-solid-state battery in the all-new MG4 deliver better low-temperature performance and enhanced structural integrity compared to a normal LFP battery, and has passed rigorous safety testing including a 360-degree puncture test.

In this configuration, the MG4 is said to be capable of 537 km of range (CLTC), and can charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. Compared to the outgoing model, it was offered with the choice of 51 kWh, 64 kWh, and 77 kWh batteries with a range of between 350 km to 520 km (WLTP).

The only detail yet to be revealed is the price. Despite mass production already underway, MG Motor has not announced pricing for the all-new MG4 in China. For reference, the current MG4 in Malaysia, which is imported from China, starts from RM103,999 for the standard variant.
