Chery Super Hybrid PHEV promises 1,200 km of range – Malaysia debut on Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 PHEV CSH

Chery Malaysia has officially “launched” its new Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain here in the country, a series-parallel system that the company claims is capable of offering a combined driving range of 1,200 km.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen the CSH powertrain before – the recently launched Tiggo Cross Hybrid too comes with a CSH powertrain. Today’s “launch”, however, was the official introduction of the PHEV variant, which will be making its debut on the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV CSH and the Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV CSH, the former previously also previewed earlier this year during Malaysia Autoshow 2025.

The heart of the new CSH PHEV system is a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 143 hp and 215 Nm of torque, with a claimed thermal efficiency of 44.5%. This engine is paired to a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), dubbed the DHT 150, which houses an electric motor producing 204 hp (150 kW) and 310 Nm.

Combined, the total system output for the CSH PHEV powertrain is rated at 347 hp (255 kW) and 525 Nm of torque.

The system is equipped with an 18.3 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which allows for a pure EV range of 90 km and supports up to 40 kW DC fast charging, which enables a 30-80% recharge in 19 minutes. If these specifications sound familiar, it’s because this is essentially the same PHEV system used in the Jaecoo J7 PHEV.

To assure the safety of the CSH system, Chery is subjecting the powertrain to what it calls the “world’s most rigorous” safety validation campaigns through its Global Safety Challenge. The first phase involved subjecting a Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV to a seven-car stack test, crash testing, and a 720-hour salt spray exposure test.

For the second phase in Indonesia, the carmaker submerged the CSH battery pack in a one-metre-deep seawater tank for 53 hours and – in a statement of its durability – reinstalled it into a Tiggo 8 PHEV before successfully driving it down a steep slope.

Not much info has been announced yet for either cars, although both of them – which we were told are very similar to the eventual launch specification – were displayed during the event today. The Tiggo 8 PHEV, previously showcased as the Tiggo 8 Pro e+, will sport a different interior from its petrol-powered sibling, featuring a 15.6-inch infotainment display, a new digital gauge cluster, a new centre console design, new seat upholstery, and a column-mounted gear shift lever.

As for the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV CSH, the car is identical to the unit shown during the motor show. It features a redesigned exterior from the model’s second facelift update unveiled globally last year, paired to a mostly unchanged interior, save for a tweaked centre console to house the new gearshift lever and drive mode buttons.

Chery Malaysia did not reveal any estimated pricing for the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV CSH, nor did it state when the company will launch these two models. However, with less than half a year to go in 2025, it’s reasonable to speculate that we could see a Malaysian launch for at least one of these CSH models before 2025 bows out.

At the launch today, Chery Malaysia also revealed its next-generation CSH PHEV powertrains, which will be making their way into future models. This future system will feature a new petrol engine running on the ultra-efficient Lambda cycle, with a claimed thermal efficiency of over 48%.

This new engine will be paired with the next-generation DHT units, the DHT 230 and DHT 280. The DHT 230 will produce 313 hp (230 kW) and be based on a 400V architecture, while the more powerful DHT 280 will produce 381 hp (280 kW), courtesy of its 800V architecture.
