MG HS ‘Super Hybrid’ PHEV launching in Australia by September 2025 – up to 1,000 km range

MG is joining the gang of “Super Hybrid” plug-in hybrids (PHEV) from China with the all-new MG HS Super Hybrid PHEV. The new PHEV powertrain option for the second-generation MG HS boasts a combined range of 1,000 km in a single tank, and will be making its way to Australia by September 2025.

Revealed for the land down under today, the all-new MG HS Super Hybrid features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine mated to a traction motor to produce a combined output of 299 hp (220 kW) and 350 Nm. In performance terms, that translates to a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 6.8 seconds.

On the electric front, the motor is supplied by a 24.7 kWh battery that gives it a pure electric range of 120 km (WLTP). Together with a tank of fuel, MG Australia says that it’ll return a fuel consumption figure of 5.5 L/100km, and travel over 1,000 km.

For comparison, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV – which occupies the same segment as the MG HS – is rated for an output of 347 hp and 525 Nm, while the 18.3 kWh supplies enough juice for an electric-only range of 106 km (NEDC). Combined, the Jaecoo is rated for a total range of 1,300 km, although that is also on the slightly more lenient NEDC test cycle.

The all-new second-generation MG HS takes on a sharper look compared to the car available here in Malaysia – which is still the first-generation model. The front and rear now feature LED lightbars stretching across from end to end, and the all-new MG HS – in its hybrid trim levels – now sits on 19-inch wheels as standard.

Overall, the car looks like a taller, beefed-up version of the MG3 hatchback that was previewed at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) last year, featuring a similar wide lower grille in front – although the rear design is uniquely to the crossover model.

Inside, it features dual 12.3-inch displays for the infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster as standard. Depending on the variant, the MG HS Super Hybrid might be offered with a Sunroof, 360-degree camera, Electronically adjustable passenger seats, and more. In Australia, the car is also packed with a full suite of safety systems including: Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Autonomous Cruise Control (ACC), and Emergency Lane Keep Assist (ELKA), just to name a few.

Two trims of the MG HS Super Hybrid are available in Australia, namely: the Excite, and the Essence. The Excite variant is priced at AUD52,990 (approx. RM145k), while the MG HS Super Hybrid Essence is priced at AUD55,990 (approx. RM153k).

For reference, Both the BYD Sealion 6 and Jaecoo J7 come in cheaper than the MG HS, with sticker prices starting at AUD42,990 (approx. RM117k) and AUD47,990 (approx. RM131k) respectively.
