Continental to close tyre plant in Alor Setar, Kedah by the end of 2025


Continental Tyres has announced its decision to cease tyre manufacturing operations at its Alor Setar, Kedah facility by the end of 2025, according to a report by NST.

The facility currently employs 950 employees, manufactures tyres for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and motorcycles for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Continental stated that this decision follows a comprehensive business review assessing the company’s competitiveness and business performance within the APAC region. The company’s’ manufacturing footprint in the APAC region currently includes facilities in China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

Spanning 133,000 sq m, the Alor Setar facility commenced operations in 1979 and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Continental since 2012.

In a statement, Continental affirmed its commitment to customers and partners in Malaysia, emphasising the country as a key market in the APAC region.

The company further added that it is adapting to evolving customer demands and aims to optimise its local product range and manufacturing footprint.

Continental will be supporting the 950 employees affected by the closure through the transition, offering career counselling and exploring potential job opportunities both internally and externally.
