MG Motor Malaysia has previewed the MG S5 EV in the country today ahead of its launch, following the opening of registration of interest (ROI) earlier this month. The estimated pricing for the MG S5 in Malaysia, before registration and insurance, starts from RM115,000.
The MG S5 EV is a C-segment EV crossover, measuring 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,621 mm tall, with a 2,730 mm wheelbase. It is longer and wider, but shorter than the Proton eMAS 7, and roughly comparable in size to the BYD Atto 3.
While the ROI site revealed some of the model’s design and exterior specifications, including the “Wind Hunter” active intake grille, sleek racing flag-themed LED light signature, and distinctive full-width “Family Arch” LED taillights, the preview today has given us some more info for the MG S5 EV in Malaysia, particularly its powertrain offerings.
Two rear-wheel drive (RWD) variants will be offered when the MG S5 EV is launched in Malaysia. Both variants sport identical outputs of 170 hp (125 kW) and 250 Nm, achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, with the motor also capable of four levels of energy recovery for drivers to fine-tune their experience. But it’s the batteries where the main difference is found.
Both variants use MG Motor’s “One Pack” battery packs. The base variant has a 49 kWh battery pack, offering up to 340 km (WLTP) of range, while the higher-spec variant features a larger 62 kWh battery, extending the range to 430 km (WLTP).

While both variants offer 6.6 kW AC charging, their DC fast charging capabilities and recharge times differ. The 49 kWh battery pack variant supports DC charging up to 120 kW, achieving a 10-80% charge in 24 minutes, whereas the 62 kWh battery pack variant allows for 150 kW DC charging, although its 10-80% charge time is still slightly longer at 26 minutes.
Standard interior equipment across both variants for the MG S5 EV include a 12.8-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It also features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and seven airbags.
The variant with the larger 62 kWh battery pack adds several niceties both inside and out, including a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, and leather and fabric upholstery, with an MG perforated pattern on the seats.
Additional features include a heated steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a six-speaker sound system, rear reading lamps, rain-sensing wipers, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.
Both MG S5 EV variants will feature a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with 16 features, relying on an 8MP front camera and two millimeter-wave radars. These include:
- Forward collision warning (FCW)
- Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
- Intelligent headlight control (IHC)
- Lane departure warning (LDW)
- Lane keep assist (LKA)
- Emergency lane keep assist (ELKA)
- Blind spot monitors (BSM)
- Lane change assist (LCA)
- Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA)
- Rear cross traffic braking (RCTB)
- Door opening warning (DOW)
- Rear collision warning (RCW)
- Adaptative cruise control (ACC) with Traffic jam assist (TJA)
- Smart speed limit assist (SAS)
- Drowsiness monitor system (DMS)
The MG S5 will be available in five exterior colours in Malaysia: Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red, and Elegant Latte, paired with a dark interior leather and fabric combination seat.
