Geely EX5 and BYD Sealion 7 achieve 5-star ratings in ANCAP and Euro NCAP

Both the Geely EX5 and BYD Sealion 7 have achieved a five-star safety rating from Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), which share testing data and protocols.

Euro NCAP awarded the Geely EX5 86% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 83% for vulnerable road user protection, and 83% for safety assist. The EV crossover’s scores for ANCAP is also largely similar, save for the safety assist category, where it scored a slightly higher 85%.

In the Euro NCAP frontal offset test, the Geely EX5 showed detachment of welds and tearing of metal around the base of the A-pillar. Despite Geely’s demonstration that the damage didn’t increase substantially in a harsher test, the car’s score was reduced due to this issue.

The Geely EX5 is of course the overseas counterpart to our own Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7). It should be noted that these scores are not diretly translatable to the Proton, however, as the eMAS 7 lacks a centre airbag, present in the EX5 tested here.

Still, the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) scored the highest-ever score in ASEAN NCAP back in 2024, with a full five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating and a score of 92.57 points.

Euro NCAP testing of the BYD Sealion 7 resulted in scores of 87% for adult occupant protection, 93% for child occupant protection, 76% for vulnerable road user protection, and 79% for safety assist. The Sealion 7 scores for ANCAP are largely similar, except for the safety assist category, where it scored a slightly lower 78%.

While Euro NCAP analysis suggested the BYD Sealion 7 would be a moderately safe car to be in when involved in a frontal collision, it also highlighted a weakness. The full-width rigid barrier test showed weak protection of the rear passenger’s chest, based on dummy measurements of compression.

The BYD Sealion 07 is equipped with nine airbags and the brand’s advanced driver safety assistance systems (ADAS), including ACC, AEB, FCW, and LDW. However, the Australian version of the Sealion 7 Performance does not include intelligent torque adaptation control (ITAC), an option available on the Malaysian Performance variant.
