2025 XPeng X9 previewed in Malaysia – now open for booking, cheaper than Zeekr 009?

The 2025 XPeng X9 fully electric MPV has made its local debut here in Malaysia, in a preview session held for members of the media today. While no specifications have been detailed yet (and the car on display is still a pre-production unit), a Bermaz XPeng spokesperson said that they have already begun collecting bookings for the model, ahead of its official launch in Malaysia.

The XPeng X9 is a fully electric luxury MPV with three-row seating in a 2-2-3 configuration, measuring even longer than the Zeekr 009 (although with a shorter wheelbase, and also slightly narrower), its main competitor. Its size dwarfs that of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire, and from the display unit shown here, so is its standard equipment.

Obviously, the main act of the show is in the rear passenger quarters, which is accessed through the sliding doors. The unit shown here is equipped with the higher-grade “zero gravity” captain seats, which can automatically recline to a comfortable lounging position, but we were told that a second, base variant will come with a set of standard captain chairs, with a walkway in between to access the third row.

Other interior appointments include the roof-mounted 21.4-inch touchscreen TV for the second row with access to streaming services (Apple TV, Spotify etc.), a hot-and-cold “fridge”, seat heating and ventilation for the first and second row, as well as a massive panoramic glass roof.

As with all other XPeng cars, the dashboard design is very minimal and Tesla-like, with most features concentrated on the central 17.3″ central control screen. Unlike Teslas, though, the XPeng X9 does have a small letterbox-style instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, as well as regular stalks behind the steering wheel.

Again, no detailed specifications have been revealed so far, but based on its right-hand drive export specifications from Hong Kong, the XPeng X9 will likely only be offered in a front-wheel drive configuration here in Malaysia, featuring a single motor with a max output of 320 hp (235 kW).

This is paired to two battery options: the Standard Range variant gets an 84.5 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, translating to 480 km of electric range (WLTP), as well as a Long Range version with a 101.5 kWh pack, for a rated range of 575 km (WLTP). Both variants are rated for a 0-100 km/h sprint of 7.7 seconds.

A dual chamber air suspension is standard, as is the active rear-wheel steering system that results in a minimum turning radius of just 5.4m – even smaller than that of the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

With bookings for the electric MPV now open, it appears we won’t have to wait too much longer for the XPeng X9 to make its official launch here in Malaysia. With this, 2025 is shaping up to a busy year for the electric MPV space, as the Denza D9 is also set to make its debut here in Q1 2025.
