The Omoda C9 SUV has been teased in Malaysia. The announcement comes from a collaborative post by Jaecoo Malaysia and the newly established Omoda Malaysia. The shadowy photo that was published on its social media pages comes with an accompanying caption “A new chapter is about to begin. Coming soon.”, suggests an imminent arrival in the Malaysian market.
Globally, Omoda and Jaecoo (collectively known as “O&J”) function as separate brands outside China to support Chery’s export strategy – although they usually share the same dealers separate from its parent company.

In Malaysia, however, the Omoda brand is currently marketed under Chery, while Jaecoo exists as a separate brand with its own standalone dealerships. With the new Omoda Malaysia branding and social media pages, it appears we could soon be following the same strategy used in other markets too.
The Omoda C9, also known as the Exeed RX or Yaoguang in China, is a five-seater mid-size SUV built on the M3X platform. First revealed in February 2023, the Omoda C9 measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,671 mm tall, with a wheelbase spanning 2,800 mm. These dimensions position it as larger than the Honda CR-V but comparable to the Proton X90 and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro in terms of size.

If it reflects the China Domestic Market specifications, the Omoda C9 is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This powertrain delivers 261 hp (metric) and 400 Nm of torque and drives the front wheels only. The Chinese-market Exeed RX also offers all-wheel drive (AWD) and an eight-speed automatic transmission model.
The Omoda C9 is also available in a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The PHEV system also includes a front electric motor or an additional rear motor. It delivers a combined power output of up to 619 hp (metric) and 920 Nm of torque.

Aside from the Omoda C9, Jaecoo has also previously previewed the J8 here in Malaysia. The Jaecoo J8 has been previously hinted at a local launch by Q4 2024, and given that it shares the same market segment as the Omoda C9, it could be interesting to see how Chery plans to differentiate the two models to consumers.
