Ford has introduced the all-new Ford Ranger PHEV, marking the first-ever plug-in hybrid variant of the popular pickup truck. This model combines a traditional combustion engine with an electric motor for a more versatile and fuel-efficient driving experience.
The Ford Ranger PHEV utilizes a 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 102 hp (metric) electric motor. This powertrain is coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, before sending power to the road surfaces through its four-wheel drive system. The highlight of the system is its ability to travel up to 45 km in electric-only mode, based on the WLTP testing standard.

The 11.8 kWh battery pack for the electric motor is housed within the chassis frame rails, ensuring it doesn’t compromise cargo space. Ford hasn’t revealed details on charging times, but the Type 2 charging port located behind the fuel filler flap does suggest that it’ll only support AC charging as standard.
Specific power and torque output figures for the Ford Ranger PHEV will also only be released closer to its launch in 2025. However, the manufacturer has previously indicated that the PHEV model will surpass the torque output of the Ford Ranger Raptor, which boasts 583 Nm from its turbocharged V6 engine.

The addition of a hybrid system has not affected the Ranger PHEV’s load-carrying and towing capabilities, as it is still rating at a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg, unchanged from the other combustion Ranger models. The addition of a battery also did not hamper its off-road capabilities, as it is still equipped with a four-wheel drive system with selectable terrain modes, dual-range transfer case, and a rear locking differential.
On the electronics front, the Ford Ranger PHEV now offers four driving modes to optimize battery usage and performance: Auto PHEV for balanced operation, EV Now for pure electric driving, EV Later for reserving battery charge, and EV Charge for prioritizing battery charging during driving.
The Ford Ranger PHEV also features Pro Power Onboard, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology that enables it to power external devices. This system offers a total output of 6.9 kW, with a 2.3 kW cabin socket and two 3.45 kW outlets in the cargo bed.
