We managed to spot a right-hand-drive (RHD) Dongfeng Nammi 01 here in Malaysia. The car is expected to arrive in Malaysia by mid-2024. If you recall, last November, The Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (Pekema) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFMC), represented by China Dongfeng Motor Industry (DFMIEC).
The initial MoU will see the two parties bringing the Dongfeng Nammi 01 (S31) electric vehicle (EV) into Malaysia. Said to be launching here sometime in the middle of this year, the Dongfeng and Pekema will not only be bringing the Nammi 01 into Malaysia but are also planning to locally assemble it in the future. This will make Malaysia the Dongfeng Nammi 01 EV hatchback’s RHD market. Reportedly, the Nammi 01 will be exported to other ASEAN countries for sale after the completion of production in Malaysia.

The Nammi 01 will be a direct competitor with the BYD Dolphin. Dimension-wise, it measures 4,030 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall, and is underpinned by a 2,660 mm wheelbase compared to the dimensions of the BYD Dolphin which measures 4,290 mm long, 1,570 mm tall, 1,770 mm wide, and is underpinned by a 2,700 mm long wheelbase.
Performance-wise, the China-spec is equipped with a front-mounted front-wheel drive single motor with a maximum power of 93 hp and a peak torque of 160 Nm with a top speed of 140 km/h. According to the NEDC test conditions, it can support a maximum range of 330 km and 430 km.

Safety specifications for the Malaysian-spec Nammi 01 have yet to be confirmed. If it reflects the China-spec Nammi 01, it should be equipped with Level 2 semi-automatic driving assistance, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, active cruise control (ACC), and automatic parking function.
Initially planned for mid-2024, the market launch of the Nammi 01 is slightly off track. However, with the sighting of the RHD version Nammi 01, its launch should be just around the corner.
