Jaecoo J5 HEV and BEV shown in China – could arrive in Malaysia by 2026

Omoda Jaecoo has showcased electrified versions of the Jaecoo J5, including new hybrid (HEV) and battery electric (BEV) variants of the compact B-segment crossover, at its Chery International Business Summit in Wuhu, held alongside the Beijing Auto Show 2026.

For now, nothing has been confirmed on our end. But word from Omoda Jaecoo dealers and leadership has indicated that new Jaecoo J5 versions could make its way to our shores sometime this year, possibly alongside the Omoda C4

The biggest difference, obviously, will lie under the skin. The Jaecoo J5 hybrid will feature a newer super hybrid system-H (SHS-H). It’s the same series-parallel system as Jaecoo’s PHEV system (now renamed as SHS-P), but with a smaller battery and without the need for plug-in charging.

Under the bonnet of the hybrid variant sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 143 hp and 215 Nm of torque. Power is supplied to a 1.82 kWh battery, which feeds a front-mounted electric motor rated at 204 hp and 310 Nm. If needed, the engine can also contribute to propulsion at higher speeds via a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

Combined, the system delivers a total output of 224 hp. This is still slightly lower than the PHEV system in the J7 PHEV, which produces 279 hp and 365 Nm. In the hybrid, 0-100 km/h is achieved in just 7.9 seconds, two seconds quicker than the pure ICE variant, while top speed is rated at 175 km/h. Jaecoo claims a fuel consumption figure of 5.3 litres per 100 km (18.9 km/l), with a total range of up to 980 km on a single 51-litre tank.

As for the BEV version, it sports a single front-mounted electric motor producing 207 hp and 288 Nm of torque, allowing for a century sprint time of just 7.7 seconds (according to the UK website where the car has launched). It uses a 61.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that allows up to 399 km (WLTP) of range. To charge it up, the car supports 80 kW DC charging — allowing a 30-80% charge in just 27 minutes. And for added convenience, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to charge external appliances on the go.

Visually, both models remain largely similar to the pure ICE version, with the BEV variant, of course, featuring a closed-off front grille. As with the J7 PHEV, both electrified versions also come with unique 18-inch wheel designs incorporating more closed-off panels, presumably to reduce drag.

Inside, the similarities continue. The cabin features an eight-inch letterbox-style instrument cluster paired with a 13.2-inch portrait-oriented central infotainment screen. Other highlights include a wireless charger, a dual-layered centre console, and faux leather seats.

To further differentiate the BEV variant, it gets blue piping on the seats, as opposed to white in the hybrid and ICE models. Additionally, in the absence of an engine, the BEV also gains a front trunk (frunk).

The Jaecoo J5 BEV has already launched in several neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia, while the HEV is currently available in the UK, with the Australian market set to follow soon. Given that both electrified variants have already established a presence in these markets, their arrival here is likely just a matter of time.
