Proton has launched the updated Proton X90 in Malaysia. Following the footsteps of its siblings, the X50, S70, and X70, the new X90 sports a new powertrain, ditching the mild-hybrid setup found in the pre-update model. The line-up has also been streamlined to three variants, down from four offered previously. Prices for the new Proton X90 start from RM106,800, on-the-road, excluding insurance.
- Proton X90 Lite – RM106,800
- Proton X90 Prime – RM116,800
- Proton X90 Prime X – RM122,800

For comparison, the new entry price for the new Proton X90 is RM17,000 lower than the outgoing Standard variant, which sold for RM123,800. The price cuts are even more dramatic at the top-of-the-range, as the new Prime X is RM30,000 cheaper than the previous Flagship variant, which was priced at RM152,800.
The updated X90 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 181 hp and 290 Nm of torque. This is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that drives the front wheels, returning a claimed fuel consumption of 6.9 L/100 km.
This new powertrain replaces the 48V mild-hybrid setup, which produces a combined 190 hp and 300 Nm from its 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and belt starter generator (BSG). Consequently, the four-cylinder unit is not only 9 hp and 10 Nm down on the outgoing hybrid, but it is marginally less efficient to boot as the mild-hybrid powertrain manages a claimed fuel consumption of 6.8 L/100 km. Other mechanicals remain unchanged, with the X90 carrying over its rear multilink suspension, unlike the Geely Haoyue and Okavango twins, which utilise a torsion beam.
Visually, the updated X90 remains all but identical to its predecessor, retaining the signature infinite weave front grille. In a curious bit of equipment reshuffling, the panoramic sunroof and powered tailgate have been axed, though the X90 does gain a new set of roof rails rated to carry 75 kg. The 19-inch wheels have also been dropped, with the entire range now riding on 18-inch items wrapped in Giti tyres, replacing the Continental units found previously.
The standard exterior equipment of the new Proton X90 Lite variant includes:
- LED headlights
- LED daytime running lights (DRLs)
- Front sequential turn signal lamps
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Powered side mirrors with auto fold functionality
- Utility roof rails with a capacity of 75 kg
Stepping up to the Proton X90 Prime variant adds the following exterior features:
- Automatic headlights with follow-me home functionality
- Automatic windshield wipers

Inside, the Proton X90 finally gains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard across the range. The three-row cabin is available in either seven- or six-seat configurations; the latter features individual captain chairs in the second row. However, much like the exterior, the interior has suffered its own round of subtractions. The wireless charging pad, ambient lighting, and leather-wrapped steering wheel have all been removed from the specification list.
The boot space on the Proton X90, with the third row up, is rated at 257 litres. Folding the third row expands the rear boot space to 1,011 litres. The maximum cargo capacity, with the second and third rows folded, is 2,050 litres.
Standard interior equipment of the Proton X90 Lite variant includes:
- 12.3-inch centre infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 3.5-inch metre combination
- Leatherette upholstery
- 60:40 split folding second-row seats
- 50:50 split folding third-row seats
- Automatic dual-zone climate control with an air purifier and air vents for the second and third row.
- Six-speaker sound system
- Seven USB ports
- Remote engine start
Stepping up to the Proton X90 Prime variant adds the following interior equipment:
- 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster
- Six-way power adjustable driver seat
Stepping up to the Proton X90 Prime X variant adds the following interior equipment:
- Nappa leather upholstery
- Six-way power adjustable driver seat with two-way lumbar support
- Four-way power adjustable front passenger seat with ‘Boss’ switch
- Ventilated first and second row seats
- Second-row captain chairs for a six-seater seating configuration
- First and second row ergonomic headrests
- Digital video recorder
On the safety front, the new Proton X90 no longer offers ADAS across the range, a notable omission compared to the previous model. The standard safety kit is now limited to six airbags, four rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera. The Prime and Prime X variants, however, gain additional features, including two front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera with a 180-degree transparent view, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
The exterior colour palette has also been revised, now featuring five options, including a new addition called Quartz Black. While Marine Blue, Snow White, Armour Silver, and Jet Grey remain in the line-up, the previously offered Ruby Red and Cinnamon Brown have been dropped from the catalogue.
