TMJ takes delivery of a bespoke Bugatti Mistral for the royal garage

The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, better known as TMJ, is renowned for an extensive car collection that includes the Ford GT, the Koenigsegg Jesko and the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport. He has recently added another exclusive ride to the stable, having taken delivery of a new Bugatti Mistral.

Limited to 99 units globally, this open-top hypercar is powered by an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine that produces 1,578 hp. It is a machine capable of reaching hair-raising speeds of upwards of 454 km/h, a figure that established the Mistral as the world’s fastest open-top production car.

While his Chiron Super Sport was built for hunting top-speed records in a closed cockpit, the Mistral offers a more visceral experience. It allows the Johor Regent to enjoy the same immense power with the added drama of the open air, featuring roof-mounted air scoops right behind the driver’s head that amplify the engine’s unique sound.

This acquisition carries significant weight as the Mistral marks the final road-going use of Bugatti’s 8.0-litre W16 engine. This retirement signals a shift toward the hybrid era, which begins with the Bugatti Tourbillon, a plug-in hybrid featuring a naturally aspirated V16 engine.

The specification of this particular Mistral is as deliberate as it is striking, featuring a porcelain-like finish and black 20-inch alloy wheels. The interior is highlighted by a bespoke personal monogram set against a carbon-fibre backdrop. This gold-inlaid detail features the TMJ initials topped with the Johor Royal Crown, serving as a unique tribute to the owner within the cabin.

Exclusivity of this level does not come cheap, nor is it available to just anyone with a healthy bank balance. All 99 units were sold out before the car was even officially revealed, with the Bugatti Mistral carrying a starting price of EUR5 million (approx. RM23 million). However, given the extensive customisation involved in this royal commission, the final value of the Regent’s Mistral is estimated to be significantly higher than the base figure.
