Denza Z9 GT updated in China with 1,036 km range – coming to Malaysia next?

First launched over two years ago, Denza thinks its due time for the Denza Z9 GT to receive an update. Unveiled through its Weibo social media account, the sleek shooting brake returns with more power, improved safety, and extended range — potentially making it one of the most impressive EVs in its class.

According to regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), as reported by CarNewsChina, the headline upgrade for the fully electric variant is a new 122.5 kWh Blade Battery 2.0. With it, the Z9 GT now claims up to 1,036 km of range under the CLTC cycle and supports up to 1,500 kW of charging via BYD’s “Flash-Charging” technology.

The new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant is powered by a single 503 hp (370 kW) motor on the rear axle, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) model produces up to 1,156 hp (850 kW) and is capable of a 270 km/h top speed.

If verified, the 1,036 km figure would make the Denza Z9 GT the longest-range production EV in the world — at least on the CLTC cycle. While numerous publications were quick to crown it the title of “world’s longest EV range”, BYD/Denza has not officially made that claim.

The Z9 GT remains available as a plug-in hybrid. The updated model introduces the new DM 6.0 hybrid system, pairing the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with three electric motors. Output now rises to 870 hp (640 kW), with a top speed of 230 km/h. A larger 63.82 kWh battery increases the claimed electric-only range to 400 km (CLTC).

Compared to the previous generation, the EV variant gains up to 193 hp, while range jumps dramatically from 630 km to 1,036 km (CLTC). The PHEV version also sees its EV-only range nearly double, from 201 km to 400 km.

Apart from the mechanical updates, little appears to have changed on the outside. According to CarNewsChina, the refreshed model rides on new 21-inch wheels and introduces a new “Fjord Green” paint option. Look closer, however, and a subtle bump above the front windscreen reveals a more significant upgrade — suggesting the addition of more advanced driver assistance hardware.

The report states that this could house BYD’s DiPilot 300 “God’s Eye” 5.0 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which incorporates a roof-mounted LiDAR unit alongside an array of cameras and sensors positioned around the vehicle to enable highly advanced autonomous driving capabilities.

Inside, the Denza Z9 GT remains largely familiar. The main update is a new triple-screen layout, featuring dual 13.2-inch displays for the driver and front passenger, paired with a 17.3-inch floating central touchscreen. The gear selector has also been relocated to a column-mounted stalk behind the steering wheel, which now adopts a new three-spoke design.

With the Denza Z9 GT already confirmed for Malaysia following announcements during a recent media event, the question now is whether this updated version will be the one destined for our market. While it is unlikely that BYD’s full “God’s Eye” ADAS suite will be offered locally, an EV capable of delivering over 1,000 km of range on a single charge would undoubtedly make an attractive option for Malaysian buyers.
