Denza Z9 GT shooting brake confirmed for Malaysia – launching as early as Q2 2026

BYD Malaysia has confirmed that the Denza Z9 GT is officially headed for our markets. The announcement was made during a recent media gathering, where the company revealed that the model is slated to arrive in 2026 – as early as Q2 this year according to a BYD Malaysia spokesperson.

First previewed locally in February last year, and later showcased again at the BYD Tech Discovery event alongside the BYD Shark 6 PHEV pickup truck, the Denza Z9 GT is positioned as the brand’s flagship luxury shooting brake.

Up front, the Denza Z9 GT features a split headlight design, with the daytime running lights positioned lower than the main light beams, creating a distinctive “mascara-like” lighting signature. At the rear, large taillights span the width of the car, detailed with intricate graphics that subtly echo the look of classic American muscle cars from the 1960s.

In terms of size, the Z9 GT measures close to 5.2 metres in length and rides on a substantial 3,125 mm wheelbase. This makes it larger than established executive shooting brakes such as the Porsche Panamera, BMW 5 Series Touring and Audi A6 Avant. Enhancing its presence further, the preview unit shown in Malaysia rode on distinctive 20-inch aero wheels, reinforcing its wide and planted stance.

If the overall design feels somewhat familiar, there is good reason for that – Denza’s chief design director is one Wolfgang Egger, a renowned automotive designer whose past work includes stints at Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini. With the Malaysian market seeing a steady stream of SUV introductions from Chinese brands in recent years, the arrival of an elegantly styled shooting brake like the Z9 GT will certainly offer a refreshing alternative in the premium segment.

Inside, the layout will feel familiar to those acquainted with the Denza D9, as the Z9 GT carries over a similarly tech-focused dashboard design. The cabin is generously upholstered in leather and complemented by open-pore wood trim, lending it a properly premium ambience.

Unlike the brand’s MPV, however, the Z9 GT comes with larger displays, including a 17.3-inch central infotainment screen and a 13.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Other highlights include an expansive ambient lighting system, 50-watt Qi wireless charging pads, and a heated and cooled storage compartment neatly integrated beneath the centre armrest.

In China, the Denza Z9 is available as both a fully electric vehicle (EV) and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The former, likely the model coming to Malaysia, uses a dual-motor setup producing a total of 963 hp (710 kW) and 710 Nm of torque to all four wheels (AWD), allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.4 seconds. Fitted with a 100.1 kWh LFP battery, the Z9 GT is rated for a range of 630 km under the CLTC test cycle.

The PHEV variant, on the other hand, sports a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that functions as a generator motor to power the motors. This results in a total system output of 870 hp (640 kW), allowing for a marginally slower century sprint in 3.6 seconds. Utilising BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid system, the car is capable of a 201 km pure EV range (CLTC), thanks to its 38.5 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Combined with the combustion engine, the range is rated at a total of 1,100 km.

To further enhance comfort and handling, the Z9 GT comes standard with dual-chamber air suspension, which allows it to adjust its ride height and lower itself by up to 50 mm when needed. It also features an especially capable rear-wheel steering system as standard, offering up to 20 degrees of steering angle.

This significantly reduces the turning radius to just 4.62 metres, while also enabling party tricks such as “crab walking” and even rotating in place — a feature that could prove particularly useful for Malaysians navigating tight parking spaces.

It remains unclear whether all of these features will make it to the Malaysian model. Regardless, the Denza Z9 GT is a seriously good-looking car that’s bound to snap a few necks as it cruises along our roads. For current BYD Seal owners thinking about moving up the ladder, this flagship shooting brake could make for a very tempting upgrade.
