Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD launched in Malaysia – up to 661 km WLTP range, from RM219k

Tesla Malaysia has introduced the new Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) in Malaysia. Previously, the Model Y was only available in a standard RWD and a Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and this new model now sits in between those models with a starting price of RM218,575 on the road and without insurance.

Now available for order through the Tesla configurator, the new “Long Range” variant boasts a WLTP-rated range of 661 km — 195 km more than the standard RWD (466 km), and 61 km more than the Long Range AWD (600 km). In typical fashion, though, Tesla did not quote the battery’s actual capacity.

The Long Range RWD can recharge up to 274 km in 15 minutes via Tesla’s Supercharger, compared to the 238 km in the Standard RWD in the same time frame. The AWD, however, charges up to 283 km under the same conditions.

As its name suggests, power is sent to the rear wheels only, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.6 seconds. This is interestingly faster than the standard RWD model, which completes the same run in 5.9 seconds. This hints at a slightly more powerful rear motor, but naturally still slower than the AWD, which does it in 4.8 seconds.

Equipment-wise, it largely mirrors that of the Standard RWD model. Notable standard features include a nine-speaker sound system, interior ambient lighting, and a panoramic glass roof. It also receives the latest updates to the Model Y here, first seen on the Tesla Model Y L in China, including the larger 16-inch centre screen, an eight-inch second-row screen, and an optional black headliner.

One thing to note is that the new model is only available with the 19-inch Crossflow wheels and not the 20-inch Helix wheels — which we presume has helped the car achieve its claimed 661 km WLTP range.

As always, optional features include Enhanced Autopilot at RM16,000 and Full Self-Driving Capability at RM32,000, with the latter not yet operational in Malaysia. The Model Y is also offered in several colours, some of which require an additional cost. Stealth Grey is standard, while Pearl White Multi-Coat costs RM5,000 extra, Glacier Blue RM7,500, and both Quicksilver and Ultra Red are priced at RM11,000.

Included in the price are a four-year/80,000 km basic vehicle warranty, a five-year/100,000 km supplemental restraint system warranty, and an eight-year/192,000 km warranty for the battery and drive unit, guaranteeing a minimum 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period.
