Following its teaser last month, the Tesla Model Y L has now officially made its debut in China. As hinted by its unique badging on the tailgate, the Model Y L is indeed a three-row variant of the regular Tesla Model Y, featuring six total seats inside.
Unlike the previous three-row Model Y, which was available in the United States previously, the new Tesla Model Y L, based on the Juniper facelift model, actually comes with an extended wheelbase, measuring 149 mm longer than the regular car alongside a 179 mm longer overall length.
Paired to the taller (and more concave-shaped) roofline, which now measures 44 mm taller than the regular Model Y, the L variant’s third row seats should actually be usable for grown adults this time round.
In terms of seats, the L version swaps the second-row bench seats in the regular Model Y for two individual captain chairs, while adding on a third-row bench for a 2-2-2 layout. The captain seats in the second row feature power-retractable armrests, ventilation and heating functions, alongside power recline and folding functions – pretty fancy stuff.

Like the regular Model Y, the new Tesla Model Y L in China also features a large panoramic glass roof, although the supporting beam that separates the roof and rear glass looks a little more prominent here, as it’s located right above the heads of the third-row passengers. Nevertheless, the company still promises “ample headroom and legroom” for each seat.
Other changes in the cabin include a slightly larger central touchscreen that now measures 16 inches, compared to 15.4 inches on the regular Model Y; upgraded wireless charging pad with built-in air cooling that supports simultaneous fast charging at up to 50W and 30W; upgraded Tesla Audio system with a new subwoofer at the base of the centre console and a total of 19 speakers, additional air vents in the B- and C-pillars, as well as new power-extendable thigh support for the front seats.
Tesla also notes that the total maximum cargo volume (with all seats folded down) is now 2,539 litres, compared to the 2,130 litres on the regular Model Y.
The Tesla Model Y L will be offered in China in a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain configuration, with motor outputs rated at 193 hp and 269 hp for the front and rear motors respectively, according to a regulatory filing with China’s government. Total outputs are not available, as per Tesla tradition, but the company does note a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds, onward to a top speed of 201 km/h.
It’ll feature an 82 kWh nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) ternary battery, that should translate to a CLTC-rated range of 751 km. Compared to the regular Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD variant, the Tesla Model Y L boasts one extra km of range, while its century sprint is 0.2 seconds slower.

Pricing for the six-seater Tesla Model Y L starts from CNY339,000 (approx. RM199k) in China. For context, the Long Range AWD variant is priced at CNY313,500 (approx RM184k), while the Rear-Wheel Drive variant comes in at CNY263,500 (approx. RM155k).
Optional items available at checkout include premium paint finishes (Stealth Grey as a standard), as well as two levels of driver assistance packages. No optional wheel options here, though, with the 19-inch aero wheels coming as standard, and a white interior will only be available at a later date.
