MOT: No overseas travel proof required for physical driving licence starting tomorrow, RM20 fee

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has announced that starting from 23rd January 2026, Malaysians may apply for a physical driving licence (LMM) without providing proof of overseas travel. Under previous regulations, drivers were required to show evidence, such as flight tickets, to obtain a physical licence, but the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has now been directed to remove this requirement.

For those opting for the physical driving licence, a fee of RM20 will be charged to Malaysians, while non-citizens are required to pay RM100. Applications can be made at any JPJ counters or Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) nationwide without previous category restrictions.

Specific groups of people are also able to obtain a physical driving licence at no charge:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above
  • Holders of Class A and A1 licences
  • Disabled persons (OKU) registered with the Department of Social Welfare

This latest update arrives nearly three years after the MOT first introduced the digital driving licence system in February 2023. To date, the MyJPJ mobile application has recorded 13 million users, reflecting a significant shift towards digital renewals.

Current holders of the digital Malaysian Driving Licence may still continue to access their records for free via the MyJPJ application. Furthermore, renewals can also be completed directly within the app without the need to visit any physical branches.
