New digital road tax and driving licence – online renewals starting Feb 2024

Nearly a year after the initial announcement, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport today announced that driving licences (e-LMM) and motor vehicle road tax (e-LKM) can soon be renewed directly online via the JPJ Portal or MyJPJ mobile app, starting from February 1, 2024.

The online renewals facility is a part of the ministry’s digitalisation plans, which begun in February last year with the roll-out of the digital licences and road-tax system, in an effort to save time and cost for both road users and the government, while also allowing road users to more easily obtain services from the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

In a media conference, transport minister Anthony Loke said that the digital renewal platform will be carried out in phases, beginning only with private vehicle owners in the initial stage. Physical documents will still be issued during the transition period throughout 2024, especially for those who are not ready for digitalisation, although they will now only be paper printouts rather than sticker or plastic cards.

The physical road tax does not need to be displayed on the windshield as before – motorists can keep the printout stored in their cars for safekeeping. As for the physical driving licences, it appears you’ll need to present your expired card and paper printout together when requested by law enforcement, according to the example shown by the ministry. Those using e-LLM will just need to show the digital display via the MyJPJ application.

To encourage the adoption of the digital driving licence, JPJ will be offering a RM5 rebate for those who choose to renew their driving licence digitally (e-LMM) from February 1, 2024 until the end of the year. The offer is only valid for Malaysian citizens renewing digitally via JPJ counters, mySIKAP portal, MyJPJ app, or a JPJ partner (Pos Malaysia outlets and MyEG).

The MyJPJ app now has 7.5 million users as of December 31, 2023. The number is expected to increase this year, says the ministry.

As part of the app’s latest update, car owners can now share their digital road tax (e-LKM) with others, including family members and friends who have been authorised to drive the vehicle.
