The all-new 4th gen Renault Twingo sparks joy with its smiley face design, affordable price


Renault has unveiled the all-new fourth-generation Renault Twingo E-Tech electric. A quick look at the hatchback immediately brings joy on the road, thanks to its happy front façade, with LED half-moon-shaped headlights that look like it’s smiling – and if you’re brushed up on your French cars knowledge, you’d notice that the cheerful design is actually a fun nod to the first-generation Twingo!

This happy look is also carried over to the rear, where the taillights mirror the front headlights. You’ll also notice the new Twingo emblem on the tailgate, which is based on a new “Twingo alphabet” typeface that is designed in a contemporary and cheeky style, according to Renault.

Continuing on the playful MO, the alloy wheels for the Twingo are also named after children’s games, reflecting the car’s spirit. The 16-inch wheels are dubbed Domino and Diablo, while the 18-inch items are named Mikado and Reverso.

Even the four paint jobs on offer get cheeky naming: Absolute Red, Absolute Green, Mango Yellow, and Starry Black. Renault says the Absolute Green is an exact copy of the colour developed in record time for the 2023 showcar – they’re weirdly proud of that detail, for some reason.

Measuring 3,789 mm in length, 1,720 mm in width, and 1,491 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,493 mm, the Renault Twingo’s dimensions are comparable to the Perodua Axia, but with an even shorter wheelbase.

Despite its compact proportions, Renault states the new Twingo is still spacious as its interior space is optimised for versatility. Boot space on the Renault Twingo is rated at 360 litres with the rear seats up, but this can be expanded to 1,000 litres with the rear and front passenger seats folded, which enables owners to carry loads of up to two metres long.

Aiding the practical features are the standard rear independent sliding rear seats with a folding backrest for the front passenger seat.

Otherwise, the interior of the Renault Twingo mimics the “cherry interior” of the first-generation model, featuring oblong design elements that are colour-matched with the exterior paint job.

These elements include a trim on the dashboard and door cards, the latter particularly interesting as they are actually painted simultaneously with the exterior during production, and are actually part of the bodywork.

Honing in on the cheery interior, the Renault Twingo’s floormats even feature symbols you would usually find on game consoles. Adding to the fun, the column-mounted gear shift lever is Renault’s “e-pop shifter.” This fun feature is designed like a lipstick, and users can personalise the gear lever tip on higher variants.

For tech features, the Renault Twingo is equipped with a 7-inch driver’s digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch central infotainment display that features “playful graphics” and animations developed specifically for the Twingo.

The fourth-generation Renault Twingo is powered by a front-mounted electric motor making 82 hp (60 kW) and 175 Nm of torque. This enables a 0-50 km/h sprint in just 3.85 seconds, or a 0-100 km/h time of 12.1 seconds, with a top speed of 130 km/h.

Powering the Twingo is a 27.5 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery, providing a range of 263 km (WLTP). It supports AC charging at 6.6 kW, which can be upgraded to 11 kW, as well as DC charging at 50 kW.

Those performance figures are nothing to write home about, but with a starting price of under EUR20,000 (approx. RM97k)? That’s cheaper than even the BYD Seagull, which most people would recognise as a very cheap car – and at that price, not many people would probably care about its performance.
