The Mitsubishi Grandis nameplate returns for 2025 in Europe as Renault-based hybrid compact SUV

Mitsubishi Motors has announced the return of the Mitsubishi Grandis, slated for a Europe launch in 2025. However, instead of being the MPV it originally was, it will be a Renault-based hybrid compact SUV.

Mitsubishi Motors has released a set of teasers for the revived Grandis, giving us a brief peek at the upcoming SUV. However, no images of the full vehicle has been released yet, so we still don’t quite know how it’ll look like – or which Renault model it’ll be based on.

What we do know, based on Mitsubishi Motors’ press release, is that the Mitsubishi Grandis will be offered in both mild-hybrid and full hybrid variants. The full reveal of the Mitsubishi Grandis will happen in July this year, with sales to begin later on.

Mitsubishi Motors says that a second model – an electric vehicle (EV) – is also in the works. No further official details from the Three Diamonds brand are available for now, just that it will be revealed sometime this year after the Mitsubishi Grandis’ appearance.

While no details of the Grandis have been revealed, A look at Renault’s current line-up suggests that the upcoming Mitsubishi compact SUV hybrid could likely be based on the Symbioz or Austral.

The Symbioz is Renault’s latest entry in the C-SUV segment, itself essentially an elongated Renault Captur. It’s powered by the marque’s E-Tech full hybrid ‘145’ system, consisting of a 1.6-litre inline-four petrol engine, alongside two electric motors and a 1.26 kWh lithium-ion battery pack to make a combined power output of 145 hp and 250 Nm.

The Renault Austral, meanwhile, is available in both full- and mild-hybrid guises. The latter employs a more powerful ‘200’ setup, utilising a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine, while the latter, comes in both 1.2- and 1.3-litre mild hybrid forms, offering up to 162 hp and 270 Nm of torque.

The upcoming Mitsubishi Grandis won’t be the first time the Japanese Marque has tapped into Renault’s line-up; the latest-generation Mitsubishi ASX is practically a rebadged Renault Captur. Like the ASX, though, the upcoming Mitsubishi Grandis will also be exclusive to the European market.

Meanwhile in Malaysia, our Mitsubishi offerings are mainly dominated by the Mitsubishi Triton save for one SUV/MPV option, the Mitsubishi Xpander. Last updated in September 2024, the new Mitsubishi Xpander soldiers on with a 1.5-litre engine that is capable of putting out 103 hp and 141 Nm of torque, paired together with a four-speed automatic transmission. Prices for the Mitsubishi Xpander in MAlaysia starts at RM99,980.
