Proton eMAS 7’s PHEV sibling launched in Australia with 943 km of range – Coming to Malaysia next?

Geely has launched the Geely Starray EM-i in Australia. The new model is essentially the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sibling of the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7), and is a car of many names—it is also known as the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 in China, or Geely EX5 EM-i in other international markets.

Two variants of the Starray EM-i are available in Australia: Complete and Inspire, priced from AUD37,490 (approx. RM105k) and AUD39,990 (approx. RM112k). For comparison, this is approximately AUD3,000 to AUD5,000 cheaper than the fully electric (EV) Geely EX5 sold there.

Unlike its fully electric counterpart, the Geely EX5 EM-i PHEV powertrain combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, itself producing 99 hp and 120 Nm, with an electric motor that generates 218 hp (160 kW) and 262 Nm on the front axle. This enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds, onward to a top speed of 170 km/h.

Both variants of the Geely Starray EM-i are equipped with an 18.4 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which enables a pure EV range of 83 km (WLTP) and a combined range of 943 km (WLTP), the latter translating to a fuel consumption figure of 2.4L/100 km. Charging is supported via AC at 6.6 kW and DC at 30 kW, with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) also supported at 6 kW.

The interior styling pretty much mirrors that of the Proton eMAS 7. Standard equipment for the Geely Starray EM-i in Australia include a 15.4-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay, a 10.2-inch LCD instrument cluster, powered front seats, a surround-view monitor, a six-speaker sound system, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Stepping up to the top-range Inspire variant adds on a 13.8-inch head-up display (HUD), a 16-speaker Flyme sound system, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof with a powered sunshade, and larger 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Geely Starray EM-i’s launch in Australia marks the model’s debut in international markets. According to Geely, the PHEV SUV is also planned for launch in other “strategic markets,” which include Poland, Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico.

It is currently unknown if this PHEV sibling of the Proton eMAS 7 will be introduced to the Malaysian market. However, if it does make its way towards Malaysia here, it would mark the first-ever PHEV model to be sold by Proton.
