Australia and New Zealand will soon see the Geely EX5 hitting their roads. According to the Geely Australia official site, the Chinese twin of the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) has just been launched in Australia (and New Zealand) in two variants largely mirroring the Malaysian counterparts’ specifications, priced from AUD40,990 (approx. RM114k).
The Geely EX5’s 2025 Oceania debut marks the beginning of Geely’s 2030 Vision, which aims to establish over 1,100 global sales and service outlets.
To that end, Geely has established a regional subsidiary in Australia last year, aiming to integrate local dealers, suppliers, and strategic partners as part of its globalisation strategy. By the end of 2025, the Chinese carmaker intends to establish 24 dealer outlets in the Australian and New Zealand markets, with a long-term goal of over 100 outlets.
The Geely 2030 Vision also targets more product launches in markets like the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. Interestingly, Proton already has a presence in South Africa, raising the question of a potential repeat of the Egyptian situation. In Egypt, Geely established a factory to locally assemble (CKD) the Geely Emgrand and Geely Coolray – models known to Malaysians as the Proton S70 and Proton X50 – although Proton already has a CKD facility for the Proton Saga in Egypt… but we digress.
Over the next three years, Geely will launch eight new energy vehicle (NEV) models based on the GEA architecture in overseas markets. The company also debuted its international user brand, GEELY GO, which aims to connect 17 million Geely owners globally.
The Geely EX5 is a key piece to the puzzle, and the company expands to introduce it in over 20 key markets by 2025, significantly expanding its global presence. It’s already off to a good start, having surpassed the 100,000-unit production milestone in just six months.
The model has already been launched under the Geely brand in Thailand and Indonesia, and now extends its reach to Australia and New Zealand.
The Geely EX5 is available in Australia in Complete and Inspire variants, priced from AUD40,990 (approx. RM114k) to AUD44,900 (approx. RM125k). Both variants feature a front-mounted electric motor producing 218 hp (160 kW) and 320 Nm, mirroring the specifications of the Thai units and the eMAS 7.
Both variants are equipped with a 60.22 kWh battery pack. The Complete variant has a WLTP range of 430 km, while the Inspire variant offers 410 km (WLTP). Although both variants share the same battery pack, the difference in range could be due to the Inspire variant equipped with larger 19-inch alloy wheels whereas the Complete variant is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels.
This differs from the Proton eMAS 7 where the base Prime variant is equipped with a 49.52 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 345 km (WLTP). The Premium variant, equipped with the same 60.22 kWh battery as the Australian EX5, matches the Inspire’s 410 km WLTP range.
Like the eMAS 7, the Aussie Geely EX5 features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen infotainment screen and a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster as standard. The Inspire variant adds a 13.4-inch heads-up display (HUD), a 16-speaker Flyme sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.
