All-new 2025 Proton X50 – over 5,000 units sold in 38 days, best-selling SUV in August

Launched on 24 July, the all-new Proton X50 has quickly risen to become Malaysia’s best-selling SUV of August 2025, delivering 999 units in July and over 4,000 units in August – its first full month on sale – bringing the total to more than 5,000 units in just 38 days.

This helped the national carmaker achieve its highest monthly sales volume in 36 months, with 15,228 units delivered (domestic and exports) in August 2025. Year-to-date sales now stand at 100,902 units, which also translates to a 0.5% increase in market share — from 19% last year to an estimated 19.5% currently this year.

Proton attributes the X50’s early success to its production volume planning, ensuring there were sufficient stocks to meet expected market demand.

While the majority of Proton’s sales are within Peninsular, the national carmaker says interest for the all-new Proton X50 has also been growing significantly in East Malaysia. To meet the growing demand there, the Regional Parts Centre in Kuching, Sarawak, has been readied to maintain healthy stock levels, capable of delivering parts for urgent orders within just two days.

Located in the Bintawa Industrial area, the new facility now spans 28,000 sq. ft. — three times larger than the previous warehouse. Proton says its capacity has increased by 200%, allowing it to handle up to six containers at once, processing an average of 15 to 20 containers per month and storing three to 3.5 months’ worth of stock. The company added that the warehouse is prepared to receive direct shipments from overseas, ensuring a stable supply of parts.

On a separate note, the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7) remained as the nation’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) last month, recording 852 units sold in August, including both domestic and export sales. This marks a 20.7% increase over July’s sales figures — bringing the year-to-date sales figures to 5,811 units.

With the recent opening of the Proton EV plant in Tanjung Malim and the upcoming debut of the Proton eMAS 5 (stylised as e.MAS 5), billed as the nation’s first affordable EV, Proton hopes that the locally assembled models will boost EV adoption in the country.

Proton also reported a 49% increase in export sales compared to last year, with August marking the best month yet at 586 units sold across international markets. Year-to-date exports now stand at 3,144 units, led by the Proton X50, Proton Saga, and the Proton eMAS 7, the latter of which is expected to drive sales further when it goes on sale in Singapore on 17 September.

Speaking of the Proton Saga, it remains the company’s best-selling model, with over 6,000 units sold in August for a year-to-date total of 44,676 units. It was the model’s second-highest sales month in 2025, despite persistent rumours of a next-generation version.

Proton Edar Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang, said, “August was a monumental month for Proton. We achieved our best monthly sales performance in three years and crossed the six-figure sales mark for 2025, and this is a testament to our sustained market momentum. With more new models in the pipeline, we are confident of maintaining our performance level and end the year with more high sales achievements over the coming months.”
