Toyota Vios Hybrid makes global debut in Thailand, takes aim at Honda City e:HEV with identical pricing

The Toyota Vios hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has launched in Thailand, marking the global debut of the electrified Toyota Vios. Known as the Toyota Yaris Ativ HEV in Thailand, the car will be available in two variants: the HEV Premium at THB719,000 (approx. RM93k) and the HEV GR Sport at THB769,000 (approx. RM100k).

The Toyota Vios HEV models are currently offered with promotional pricing valid until 31 December 2025. After the promotional period, prices will increase to THB729,000 (approx. RM95k) for the HEV Premium and THB779,000 (approx. RM101k) for the HEV GR Sport.

Both variants are powered by a similar 1.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain to the one used in the Yaris Cross HEV. Here, the petrol engine delivers 91 hp and 121 Nm, paired with an electric motor that adds 80 hp and 141 Nm, powered by a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, the system produces a combined 111 hp sent to the front wheels through an e-CVT, enabling a top speed of 160 km/h and an impressive fuel consumption rate of 29.4 km/l.

Cosmetically, the Toyota Vios Hybrid in Thailand is essentially identical to its existing internal combustion engine (ICE) siblings. The car comes standard with new 16-inch wheels with five lug nuts instead of four. The GR Sport variant, on the other hand, adds new 17-inch wheels and a more aggressive body kit. Additionally, Toyota has revised the chassis with 12% stiffer front suspension, 9% stiffer rear suspension, shock absorber cores enlarged by 10%, and retuned electric power steering for a sportier feel.

Inside, the Toyota Vios Hybrid come standard with a 10.1-inch central infotainment screen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is paired with a 7.0-inch full digital instrument cluster. The car also comes standard with a six-speaker sound system and a 64-colour ambient lighting system. The GR Sport adds more sophisticated door card trims, leather and Alcantara upholstery with GR logos, and a Pioneer six-speaker sound system.

Both variants are fitted with an extensive array of Toyota Safety Sense advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which include features such as Pre-Collision System and Automatic Braking, Front Departure Alert, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Reversing, and Adaptive Cruise Control All-Speed with Stop and Go. The most notable change comes with the addition of Lane Keep Control.

Without the promotional pricing, the new Toyota Vios HEV models in Thailand are priced exactly the same as the Honda City e:HEV at THB729,000 (approx. RM95k) for the e:HEV SV and THB779,000 (approx. RM101k) for the e:HEV RS — intensifying the competition there. If Toyota introduces the Vios HEV in Malaysia, it’s likely UMW Toyota Motor will employ a similar pricing strategy here too.
