For many, their first cup of coffee is the most important drink to start the day. Now, that brew can be extra special because you can make it using a BMW bike engine. Well, not literally, but a new coffee machine built in the shape of a classic BMW boxer engine, using actual engine parts!
Known as the “Big Coffee Boxer,” this espresso machine was developed in collaboration with BMW Motorrad and ECM Manufacture. For non-coffee aficionados, the latter is a well-known company famous for its production of high-end espresso machines.
Utilising the actual engine block of BMW Motorrad’s most powerful boxer engine from the R18, the Big Coffee Boxer cleverly replaces usual internal combustion components with a host of coffee brewing necessities. Two pressure gauges are built directly into the cylinders of the solid aluminium engine block, while the hollowed out internals house a 1.9-litre stainless steel boiler, a rotary pump, and a heat exchanger system.
All that is paired together to the iconic E61 group head for brewing professional-grade coffee. It is also equipped with professional quick-steam and hot-water valves, and offers three selectable temperatures (120°C, 124°C, and 128°C), all packaged into a system that weighs a hefty 64 kg.
Only 80 units of the Big Coffee Boxer will be made available, each machine crafted carefully by hand. No official price was revealed, but we assume this coffee machine will not be as affordable as the ones you’d buy from a home electrical store. If you’re planning to get one, ECM Manufacture says there “may” be a waiting period due to the “complex manufacturing process.”
