GAC M8 PHEV launching soon in Malaysia: 2 variants, est. RM333k and RM380k

WTC Automotif (WTCA) has once again previewed the upcoming GAC M8, which is slated to launch in Malaysia soon, joining the ranks of the luxury MPVs here.

Previously previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, the plug-in hybrid MPV will be launched with two variants, Premium and Luxury, with estimated pricing of RM333,000 and RM380,000, respectively. Both variants are now available for booking.

Despite sharing its name with a certain German two-door sports car, the GAC M8 adopts the typical boxy shape of an MPV, identified by its large front grille. It does, however, sport a distinctive daytime running light (DRL) signature that mimics the light reflection within a crystal.

Billed by WTCA as the “first” plug-in hybrid (PHEV) luxury MPV in Malaysia, the GAC M8 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a dedicated two-speed hybrid transmission, which is claimed to offer a driving range of 1,038 km

While the company did not provide official powertrain specifications, the Singaporean-spec unit previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 features a similar 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 190 hp, paired with an electric motor delivering 181 hp (134 kW) and 300 Nm. The Malaysian-bound unit will likely feature a similar powertrain.

Stepping inside the GAC M8 reveals the usual luxury creature comforts found in this segment, including second-row captain’s chairs with retractable folding tables and a sunroof. Up front, the driver and passenger get a touchscreen infotainment system flanked by dedicated physical climate and multimedia controls.

WTCA has not yet revealed the specific differences between the Premium and Luxury variants that account for the RM47,000 difference, so we will have to wait for the official launch to find out.

For safety, the GAC M8 is equipped with a suite of ADAS features and GAC’s patented 360-degree full-surround airbag technology, which notably features the world’s first rear windscreen airbag.

At the preview event, WTC Automotif CEO Mr. Tan Keng Meng revealed that the MPV comes standard with a five-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, while the battery pack, drive motor, and electric control units are covered by a separate eight-year or 150,000 km warranty.
