Audi to debut all-new EV sports car concept in September – production version confirmed for 2027

It looks like Audi is preparing to unveil an all-new fully electric sports car concept at the upcoming Munich Autoshow in September. The big news here is that this will not just be a design concept – the EV sports car will indeed be heading into production, with a full production version set to make its debut in 2027.

Speaking to German newspaper Bild, as reported by Car and Driver, Audi CEO, Gernot Döllner referred to this upcoming sports car as the “TT Moment 2.0,” hinting at the possibility of the model debuting a new design language for Audi, much like the original Audi TT did back in the late 1990s.

For those dreading that this new model is a replacement for the Audi R8, you can breathe a sigh of relief. According to Döllner, the electric model will be “a highly emotional sports car—not a TT, not an R8, but something in between”.

While Döllner has previously hinted that while the “TT” nameplate could make a return one day, heavily rumoured to be based on the (delayed) fully electric variant of the Porsche 718, this new electric concept seems unlikely to be that car.

Döllner implied previously that the TT would return via a different type of vehicle, not the small, two-door sports car of the past. This, combined with his statement that the new concept is “not a TT,” strongly suggests that this upcoming EV sports car will carry its unique nameplate and will be an entirely new addition to Audi’s line-up, rather than a direct replacement for either the TT or the R8.

While not many details were revealed, the Audi boss makes clear that it will be “an identity builder” for the brand, showcasing the marque’s new design language, new interior look, and new technical features. He also insists that the model will indeed go to production in 2027, and it’ll play an important role in getting the brand back on track, which has recently struggled with a lacklustre line-up, subpar interior quality, and a confusing naming standard.

The most powerful whisper-quiet Audi you can buy now is the Audi RS e-tron GT, priced at RM516,090. This gets you a twin-motor setup that produces 598 hp (440 kW) and 830 Nm, which can be momentarily increased to 646 hp (475 kW) in boost mode. With boost mode engaged, this allows the e-tron GT to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds.

We guess that Audi’s new EV sports car will have a powertrain producing similar numbers to the e-tron GT’s outputs, if not significantly more, considering its position as the company’s new halo car.

Still, we have to wait until September for the official unveiling to see what Audi has planned for the immediate future of its sports car line-up, among which, a rumoured successor to the Audi R8 that could potentially utilise the 920 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Lamborghini Temerario.
