Audi realises their naming strategy is too confusing, so they are going back to their old one

Back in 2023, Audi introduced a new naming strategy. The idea was to clearly separate its internal combustion engine (ICE) and fully-electric (EV) models: odd numbers for ICE, even numbers for EVs.

The result? The Audi A4 became the A5, and the next-generation A7 was slated to replace the A6. The A4 and A6 names will live on as EV models. Confused? You’re not alone. It seemed the German carmaker was having a bit of a crisis with names. They even launched a new car brand in China – wait for it – that’s also called AUDI.

It seems that this was also too confusing for Audi, because two years later, they’ve announced that the brand will be reverting to their old naming strategy, where numbers will reflect the car’s size and not its powertrain configuration. To identify the powertrain of a model, the following suffixes will be used:

  • TFSI (Internal combustion engine)
  • TFSIe (Plug-in hybrids)
  • TDI (Diesel)
  • e-Tron (Fully-electric)

“This decision is the result of intensive discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers as well as feedback from our international dealers,” says Audi AG’s Board of Management for Sales and Marketing member, Marco Schubert.

The next-generation Audi A6 will be the first model to use this ‘new/old’ naming scheme. Importantly, this change will only apply to future models. Existing models will not be renamed, presumably to avoid causing even more confusion. This is clearly for the best, as it clears things up for customers and those in the media alike.

Additionally, despite announcing plans to become a pure electric brand by 2033, Audi will maintain flexibility by continuing to offer ICE models in the near future.

Closer to home, PHS Automotive Malaysia has announced new prices for Audi models in Malaysia starting January 1st, 2025. This includes an extended coverage period for the optional Audi Assurance Package (AAP), which now extends the scheduled maintenance period from three to five years.

This sees the enhanced AAP extending the scheduled maintenance period from three years to five years. The warranty remains at five years with a 150,000 km cap, while the roadside assistance also keeps the five years of coverage.
