BYD Atto 2 confirmed for launch in Malaysia with quirky capybara teaser

BYD Malaysia, through its Facebook page, has posted a teaser on the fully electric BYD Atto 2, hinting at an imminent launch for the B-segment SUV in Malaysia.

While we’re not sure of the capybara mascot’s relation to the car on the teaser, we do have to say that it’s pretty cute nonetheless. The mascot, along with several stick figures, is seen running away from the partially revealed front fascia of the new BYD Atto 2. We’ve put an image together (above) to help you visualise.

Known as the “Yuan Up” in its home market of China, the teaser for the Malaysia-bound BYD Atto 2 comes after the model’s recent global launches in the UK and Europe. The B-segment electric SUV has also been confirmed for other right-hand drive markets like Thailand and Australia.

Dimension-wise, the BYD Atto 2 is positioned between the larger Atto 3 crossover and the smaller Dolphin hatchbaxk. It measures 4,310 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. For comparison, the Atto 2 is shorter in length than the pre-facelift Proton X50, but it is both wider and taller, while also having a slightly longer wheelbase.

While local specifications have not been revealed, the Atto 2 slated for the Australian market will be equipped with a front-mounted electric motor that produces 177 hp and 290 Nm of torque. This enables a 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h. As Australia is also a right-hand drive market, we expect the Malaysian-spec model to share the same powertrain.

The powertrain is paired with a 51 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which enables a range of 401 km based on the optimistic CLTC test cycle. Charging is supported at up to 65 kW for DC fast charging, which allows a 10-80% recharge in 28 minutes.

For interior equipment, the Australian-spec BYD Atto 2 features BYD’s rotatable infotainment display, available in either a 10.8-inch or a larger 12.8-inch size on higher variants. This is paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a heads-up display.

Other standard features include a 50W ventilated wireless charging pad and a six-speaker sound system that is packaged in an interior design that is perhaps less funky than the interiors of the Atto 3 and the Dolphin.

For safety systems, the BYD Atto 2 in Australia will be equipped with six airbags and a suite of ADAS features, which include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitors, while the top-range variants add on a reverse camera and surround-view camera.

Considering the BYD Atto 3 is priced from RM124,500 and the Dolphin ranges from RM100,000 to RM124,900, one would expect the Atto 2’s sticker price to fall within this range – especially with the government’s RM100k minimum price limit for imported electric vehicles (EV). The BYD Atto 2 will most definitely cannibalise the Dolphin in terms of pricing, so we’ll see what are the company’s plans when it launches here – which should be happening very soon.
