BYD Atto 2 previewed in Thailand ahead of launch this year – will Malaysia get it?

After it’s overseas release in the United Kingdom and in Europe – with Australia following suit towards the end of the year – it is now Thailand’s turn to debut the BYD Atto 2 (called the Yuan Up in China) at the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show 2025 (BIMS 2025), marking its regional debut in Southeast Asia – although still a preview for now.

The BYD Atto 2 is a compact fully electric (EV) crossover, occupying roughly the same footprint as the MG4, but standing significantly taller thanks to its SUV proportions. As seen with the UK and Europe releases overseas, the BYD Atto 2 adopts an Atto 3-inspired front end and headlights, whilst the rear taillights take some design cues from its smaller EV sibling, the Dolphin

On the inside, the BYD Atto 2 sports a much more minimalist dashboard styling, compared its elder brother’s weird ‘muscle-like’ touches. The unit at BYD’s BIMS2025 booth sees a tablet-sized 12.8-inch screen is proudly displayed right at the centre of the dashboard, followed by a second digital display that is the 8.8-inch digital cluster right in front of the driver.

Not much is known about the electric power plant used by the BYD Atto 2 in Thailand just yet. But based on the global model released in the UK and Europe, we can expect it to be a single-motor setup with 174 hp (139 kW) and 230 Nm of torque sent to the front wheels – in addition to a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds and arriving at its peak top speed of 160 km/h.

Powering the BYD Atto 2 is a 45.12 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that is rated for 312 km of WLTP-rated EV range. AC and DC fast charging is supported, the former takes AC power of up to 11 kW, which fully charges the battery pack in five-and-a-half hours. DC fast charging meanwhile is supported at a peak power of 65 kW, to charge the battery from 30-80% in 28 minutes.

With the BYD Atto 2 making its debut in Thailand, could Malaysia be next in line to get it? Granted, it’s a left-hand drive model being showcased at BYD’s booth, so the local launch in Thailand won’t be too soon, but a right-hand drive model was already spotted by Car News Update on Facebook not too long ago – which means it should be ready to make its regional launch in the coming months.

If it does reach Malaysian shores, the BYD Atto 2 will slot in between the Dolphin and Atto 3 in the marque’s line up here, and priced accordingly.
