Grab Malaysia launches emissions-free Grab EV service – 10 BYD M6 for KLIA rides

Grab Malaysia has launched its fully electric Grab EV service, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke officiating the service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today. The new service, specifically for rides from the airport, will be served by a fleet of 10 BYD M6 MPVs, with pickups at Door 4, Level 3, at the arrival hall of Terminal 1, KLIA.

In addition to the new pickup location, the e-hailing company has also established a new EV lounge within the arrival terminal for passengers of this premium service. The EV service costs will cost RM134 per trip, compared to RM105 for a standard six-seater at the time of the launch event.

The new Grab EV service is a collaboration between Grab Malaysia, Sime Motors, Yinson GreenTech (YGT), and Singapore-based EV charging services provider Power-Up Tech Pte Ltd.

In his opening remarks, the Transport Minister stated that the launch location for this service in KLIA is strategic due to high foot traffic, and allows exposure of the service to domestic and international passengers regarding Malaysia’s efforts in strengthening green mobility.

Loke added that he hopes this launch will be a catalyst for EV expansion throughout Malaysia, not only in Klang Valley, but also in other major cities such as Johor Bahru, Penang, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu.

He further stated that the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) will continue to support such efforts, and called on more industry players to come forward and play their role in the nation’s decarbonisation agenda.

The launch of this service is concurrent with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announcing that public transport will be the focus of development in Kuala Lumpur during the launch of the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL2040).

PTKL2040 was gazetted in May this year, with the goal of increasing public transport utilisation by 70% by 2040. It also aims to make the city more pedestrian-friendly through the addition of new pedestrian and cycling routes, in line with the Malaysia Madani framework.
