Pro-Net signs MoU with Amtel to manage end-of-life EV batteries

Pro-Net (Proton New Energy Technology), the new energy subsidiary of national carmaker Proton, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amtel Cellular (Amtel), a subsidiary of Amtel Holdings Berhad, for the proper transportation, disassembly, and disposal of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The collaboration will allow Pro-Net to benefit from Amtel’s knowledge of maximising the lifespan of EV batteries for a more sustainable, circular economy, while minimising waste. This ensures that valuable materials from the batteries can be recovered or repurposed for matters such as manufacturing new batteries or as energy storage solutions.

With the steady surge of EV adoption in Malaysia, the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) estimates that by 2050, some 870,000 EV batteries will need to be recycled in the country. This requires a proper framework to guide the proper collection, processing, and disposal of EV battery waste that will contribute to the long-term sustainability of EVs in Malaysia.

Pro-Net says that the EV battery disposal procedures will be conducted under government-mandated regulations under the Department of Environment’s (DOE) Electronic Scheduled Waste Information System (eSWIS).

Pro-Net Chief Executive Officer, Zhang Qiang, said, “Pro-Net is fully committed to sustainability, and as we help the nation transition to green mobility, we want to also ensure that in doing so, the process remains green as well.”

“While there isn’t an official government mandate yet, we are taking early steps to safeguard the proper disposal of EV batteries, ensuring that the recycling process remains economically viable while being environmentally friendly,” he added.

Amtel Cellular Chief Executive Officer, Lim Hun Teik, further emphasised that the partnership represents the company’s commitment to building an essential ecosystem around Malaysia’s growing EV market. The company wishes to provide peace of mind to EV owners throughout their vehicle lifecycle.
