Bolt, Europe’s largest mobility platform, has added a little more transparency to the e-hailing industry by integrating upfront toll fare calculations into all rides – the first platform in Malaysia to do so with full visibility in the app.
Previously, toll charges were commonly calculated separately. Drivers add these charges post-trip, resulting in an unforeseen price increases for most riders. With Bolt’s new system, this is set to change.
Bolt’s new system allows for riders to see any additional toll-charges before booking a ride thanks to the integrated toll fare calculation system. As for drivers, toll charges are automatically factored into the fares, thus rendering the practice of manually including toll charges obsolete.
This makes it far easier for riders to identify the true cost of their trip and prevents any form of miscalculation or inconveniences for both drivers and passengers.
Bolt reports that around 30% of Bolt rides in Malaysia will pass through at least one toll. With over 200 tolls currently operating throughout Malaysian roads, this new update will significantly improve the e-hailing experience of both riders and drivers.

General Manager of Bolt Malaysia, Afzan Lutfi, said “Integrating toll fares directly into our ride calculations reflects our understanding of everyday driving challenges in Malaysia. We know that tolls are an essential part of the driving experience here, and by automating the process, we eliminate unnecessary guesswork for both partner drivers and passengers.
“At Bolt, we believe that greater transparency leads to better experiences and this feature is part of our wider commitment to making urban mobility more reliable, fair, and convenient for everyone. We look forward to rolling out more locally relevant innovations in the months ahead,” he added.
Bolt also mentioned that more updates will be announced soon. The company promises upcoming features that will allow drivers streamlined access to their earnings and also improve the management of pick up distances on the app. These upgrades, Bolt says, are developed based on direct feedback from drivers on the platform and will give them more flexibility and control.
