Gullwings from China – GAC Aion Hyptec HT previewed at Malaysia Autoshow 2025

Following its teaser from earlier this year, WTC Automotif (WTCA) has now previewed the Aion Hyptec HT at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, hinting at a launch here soon.

The Hyptec HT is a D-segment SUV that sets its sights on the BYD Sealion 7, Tesla Model Y, and the upcoming Zeekr 7X. That’s some pretty tough competition, and Aion knows that – so to stand out, they’ve fitted the Hyptec HT with a set of Gull-wing doors – just like the Mercedes SLS AMG.

The GAC Aion Hyptec HT carries a smooth pebble-like exterior design with a coupe-like body shape – as if the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and a Tesla Model Y had a baby. Don’t fancy the gull-wing doors? It’s also available with more conventional doors, too.

The interior of the GAC Aion Hyper HT features a 14.6-inch central infotainment display alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Audiophiles will enjoy the 22-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, while panoramic sunroof provides additional light and visibility.

The cabin is equipped with Nappa leather seats, and the rear area includes foldable tables and reclining seatbacks for added comfort. For rear passengers, the front passenger seat can fold forward and includes a leg rest to allow more space and a more relaxed seating position- something the brand calls “First Class Experience”.

The front passengers won’t be getting a discounted experience too, with retractable leg rests and powered recline seats to relax on longer journeys.

While GAC did not provide any info at the show, the Aion Hyptec HT has already been launched regionally in Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia.

In Indonesia, the GAC Aion Hyptec HT produces 340 hp and 430 Nm from a single rear-mounted electric motor that enables a 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds. It is fitted with a 83 kWh magazine lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is capable of over 600 km of NEDC range. In Singapore, it is rated at 520 km WLTP range and a claimed 681 km “city range”.

The GAC Aion Hyper HT is scheduled to be launched in the third quarter of 2025, though local pricing has yet to be announced. In Thailand, the model is priced from THB1.45 million (approx. RM189k) for the Premium variant, going up to THB1.75 million (approx. RM228k) for the top-spec ‘Gull-wing’ version.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y starts at THB1.72 million (approx. RM224k), while the BYD Sealion 7 starts at THB1.2 million (approx. RM157k), along with the Zeekr 7X starting also at the same price.

With its distinctive gullwing doors and well-appointed interior, the question remains – will these features be enough to keep the GAC Aion Hypetec HT competitive in an increasingly crowded EV market?
