EV Porsche Cayenne set to debut this year, but ICE model is here to stay too

Back in 2023, Volkswagen Group and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed that an all-electric (EV) Porsche Cayenne is in the works. Now, right on schedule, it has been confirmed that the fully electric Porsche Cayenne is slated for an official debut towards the end of the year, as revealed by the Volkswagen and Porsche boss during a Q&A session attended by Motor1.

Unlike the Porsche Macan hanging up its engine block next year for its EV future, the current-generation Cayenne will still retain its petrol-powered engine (ICE) and live in harmony with its newer-gen EV self. It will even keep its V8 engines too.

Porsche is said to be prioritising the all-new fully electric Cayenne as their next model launch, so much so that it has overtaken the 718 Cayman/Boxster EV in their timeline. The sports car duo was originally scheduled for “mid of the decade”, with production of the current model set to end by the middle of the year. However, a Porsche spokesperson said that it is still on track for launch in the same timeframe, just now after the Cayenne makes its debut.

In other news, Porsche is also considering an “all-new gas SUV”, which the Stuttgart carmaker said it is “evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid powertrains”. This means that there will be a new SUV model sometime in the near future that is completely separate from the Macan and Cayenne, rumoured to be positioned in between the two.

Here in Malaysia, we are treated to a wide variety of Porsche Cayenne (and Cayenne Coupe) variants, including both ICE and hybrid models. Buyers are likely to gravitate towards the two CKD options available here, though, given the huge gulf in price.

The first of the locally assembled (CKD) duo is the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid Coupé, with a sticker price of RM728,000. Being an E-Hybrid variant, the model pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with an electric motor for a total of 519 hp and 750 Nm, with drive sent to all four wheels.

From a standstill, the locally-made hybrid Cayenne accomplishes a 0-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds before it reaches its top speed of 263 km/h. Paired together with the engine is a 25.9 kWh battery pack that is rated for 90 km of pure EV range, with support for AC charging upwards of 11 kW.

Also a CKD model sold on Malaysian soil is the standard Porsche Cayenne that starts from RM599,999. Like the hybridised model, it sports a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that outputs 353 hp and 500 Nm of torque to all four wheels – just without the electric motor, of course. Despite not having the extra power boost from an electric motor and battery pack, it still clocks in a 0-100 km/h speed of 5.7 seconds and 248 km/h top speed.
