Porsche has initiated testing for the fourth-gen Cayenne, which will be fully electric. The company is also developing hybrid and combustion engine variants, ensuring the Cayenne remains available with a diverse range of powertrain options until at least 2030.
The upcoming Cayenne will be based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, shared with the second-generation Macan. This platform utilizes an 800 V electrical architecture, suggesting a potential for high-performance capabilities similar to the fully electric Macan. Porsche will also continue to develop the V8 engine with upgrades that will comply with the regulations and this will live on in the third-gen Cayenne as it is further developed.

Porsche AG Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Blume stated “The Cayenne has always defined the sports car in its segment. In the middle of the decade, the fourth generation will set standards in the segment as an electric SUV”. While the upcoming fourth-generation Cayenne will be fully electric, the current third-generation model will continue production alongside its electric successor”. Porsche will offer customers a choice of electric, hybrid, and combustion engine powertrains, ensuring a range of options to suit diverse preferences. The company said that it will continue to develop hybrids and combustion engine variants beyond 2030.
Blume added, “Our product strategy could enable us to deliver more than 80% of our new cars fully electrified in 2030 – depending on the demand of our customers and the development of electromobility in the regions of the world”. The 3rd generation Cayenne got a major refresh last year. It currently offers a few powertrain options. These include a 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 and a 4.0 litre turbocharged V8, both of which are also available with a plug-in hybrid system. Porsche has confirmed that it will continue to develop the third-gen Cayenne to accommodate petrol powertrains and it will be sold alongside the fourth-gen all-electric Cayenne.

According to Best-Selling Cars, the Porsche Cayenne achieved strong sales last year with 87,553 units delivered. Recognizing that not all customers are ready to transition to fully electric vehicles, Porsche has announced plans to offer various powertrain options for the Cayenne in the coming decade. This strategy aims to cater to the diverse preferences of its customer base.
