No more ice-cream van: Pro-Net to address Proton eMAS 7 customer complaints via OTA updates

Hate that ‘ice-cream van sound’ on the Proton eMAS 7 (stylised as e.MAS 7)? Well, you aren’t the only one, and Proton has heard your complaints. A Pro-Net representative said at a recent event that the team is working to address several key pain-points that its customers have pointed out, and will be resolved iteratively through future over-the-air (OTA) updates alongside new features.

The main gripe customers have brought up is none other than the pedestrian warning sound, which many have affectionately started calling it the ‘ice-cream van sound’. The jingle automatically turns on whenever speeds fall below 30 km/h and cannot be switched off, which Pro-Net says is to comply with UN ECE regulations. However, the national carmaker is currently working to give eMAS 7 customers more options for pedestrian warning chimes.

Also due for a fix is the radio frequency memory settings on the Proton eMAS 7’s infotainment system, which at present is being reset every time upon vehicle restart. Other 4G connectivity issues have also already been resolved, Pro-Net says at the event.

Previously, the national carmaker has also confirmed that wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity will be rolled out to the Proton eMAS 7 gradually via OTA updates.

Launched in December last year, the Proton eMAS 7 is Proton’s first electric vehicle (EV). Available in two variants, the Proton eMAS 7 Prime starts at RM109,800 while the Proton eMAS 7 Premium goes for RM123,800. The national EV is also positioned to take on other similar EVs such as the BYD Atto 3.

Both variants use the same electric powertrain in a front-wheel drive (FWD). The Proton eMAS 7 has a total output of 218 hp (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. While both variants have a top speed of 175 km/h, the Prime variant has a 6.9-second 0-100 km/h time against the Premium variant’s 7.1 seconds.

Other standard features include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, and more.
