BMW has unveiled the BMW Vision Driving Experience, a prototype model designed to showcase the driving dynamics and technologies that will be included in its upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles.
While not destined for production itself, this prototype will serve as a testbed for the eventual line-up of Neue Klasse cars, with a particular focus on drivetrain and driving dynamics management. We think it probably won’t stray too far in terms of design, too, given the numerous concepts that were shown previously.
The highlight of the BMW Vision Driving Experience is the “Heart of Joy” control unit. This in-house-developed control unit boasts what BMW calls “four super-brains” (yes, that’s really what they call them), brought together to create a single high-performance computer.
This unit boasts ten times faster processing power than current systems, the company says, and works in tandem with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to manage all driving dynamics functions.
To put this control unit to the test, BMW has equipped the Vision Vehicle with a staggering 18,000 Nm of torque. According to BMW, if the control unit can handle “an explosion of power of this magnitude,” it can handle the demands of everyday driving.
The new Heart of Joy control unit and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software work together to create a smooth and effortless driving experience. This system enhances cornering precision and stability, reduces the need for driver input, and provides a seamless transition between driving modes and manoeuvres.
Furthermore, BMW says that the Heart of Joy control unit offers a 25% increase in energy recuperation, claiming that 98% of drivers will not need to use the conventional brakes.
The BMW Vision Driving Experience test vehicle demonstrates how the Heart of Joy works using illuminating colour codes on the wheel rims: acceleration is indicated in green, energy recuperation in blue, and braking using the friction brakes in orange.
This prototype will make its official world premiere at Auto Shanghai 2025, happening at the end of April 2025 to early May 2025.
