The Mazda MX-5, as lovable as they are, are not known for packing a lot of horsepower. Yet, Mazda has pulled a wild card by unveiling the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R (12R) during Tokyo Auto Salon 2025.
This exclusive model boasts the familiar 2.0-litre inline-four engine, but with a twist: it now delivers 200 hp, though Mazda remains tight-lipped on the torque figures. All this power is channelled through the good ol’ six-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
To extract more power from the standard 2.0-litre inline-four engine, which typically produces 181 hp and 205 Nm, Mazda has installed a special camshaft, revised cylinder heads and pistons, and a new exhaust manifold.
Now, 200 hp might not seem like a huge number, but the Mazda MX-5 is a lightweight sports car that’s known for its superior handling – so a small increase in horsepower can already greatly change its power-to-weight ratio. Drivers love how it feels in the corners, and this extra power could make it even more fun to drive.
To cope with the extra power, Mazda has also fitted four-pot Brembo brakes on the front with red calipers, adjustable Bilstein dampers, sports bucket seats with harnesses, an exhaust system from Fujitsubo, and Rays TE37 forged wheels wrapped in Advan AD09 tyres.
Other exclusive styling touches to the 12R include an Aero Grey paint job and aerodynamic enhancements developed from Mazda’s participation in the Super Taikyu series, which includes a front spoiler lip, side skirts, a rear diffuser, and a boot lid spoiler.
Inside, you’ll find alcantara upholstery, with the steering wheel and gear knob also wrapped in this material, adding a touch of sportiness to the cabin. All of that extra power and equipment comes at a price, though: each 12R will set you back around JPY 7 million (approx. RM200k) with production capped at 200 units.
While this limited-edition model is currently exclusive to Japan, perhaps with enough enthusiasm from driving enthusiasts worldwide, Mazda might consider gracing the global market with this exciting creation. After all, who wouldn’t want a chance to experience the nippy roadster with more power?
