Since stepping out onto the world stage on its release 1989, the MX-5 (or Miata or Roadster as you might call it) has cemented itself in the eyes of automotive enthusiasts as the greatest roadster of all time for four generations and counting. Going into its 35th year of release and having sold over 1.2 million units worldwide, Mazda is celebrating the life, legacy, and longevity of the beloved sports car with the MX-5 35th Anniversary edition.
The special edition model is set to go on sale in Japan from February 2025 until March 3, 2025, and only 1,000 units will be made.

The newest iteration of the convertible roadster is available in a soft top version as well as a hard top retractable fastback (RF). The former gets a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine, sending 134 hp and 152 Nm to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. This version will be retailing at JPY3,753,200 (approx. RM106k).
As for the RF, it gets a more powerful 2.0-litre engine of the same breed that makes 181 hp and 205 Nm, similarly paired to a six-speed manual to drive the rear wheels. This option comes in at for JPY4,354,900 (approx. RM123k). An automatic six-speed is also available for the RF, in case you’re not a fan of rowing your own gears, although it’s slightly more expensive at JPY4,382,400 (approx. RM124k).

The 35th Anniversary Model features a ‘mature’ and ‘vintage’ colour scheme of a deep red colour Mazda dubs as Artisan Red Premium Metallic, using the marque’s unique Takuminuri painting technique. Mazda states that this is the first time ever that this painting technique is used on the roadster.
The sultry red hue is paired to a set of 17-inch aluminium wheels in high-gloss finish, with exclusive “35th anniversary” badging on the outside to complete the look.
Both models also sports similar tan interiors based on the existing Roadster S Leather Package V Selection, having embossed headrests, exclusive floor mats, and an option for the key fob painted in the same Artisan Red Premium Metallic finish for its casing. For the soft-top, the tan also extends onto the fabric roof. Tasty.
