2024 Toyota Camry 2.5V launched in Malaysia – RM221,800, RM27k cheaper than hybrid

UMW Toyota Motor has quickly followed up the launch of the all-new XV80 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show with the introduction of a new non-hybrid version of the D-segment sedan – in case you’re the more traditional kind. The all-new 2024 Toyota Camry 2.5V variant retails at RM221,800 on-the-road and without insurance, making it RM27k less expensive than the Hybrid.

The main difference between the two is of course its powertrain. Here, the non-hybrid 2.5V gets a Dynamic Force 2.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine with 204 hp and 246 Nm, paired to an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission to drive the front wheels.

Compared to the hybrid, the 2024 Toyota Camry 2.5V takes 1.7 seconds longer to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint at 8.9 seconds, though it does have a slightly higher top speed of 210 km/h versus 180 km/h on the hybrid.

Without the hybrid battery and motors, the 2.5V also weighs in roughly 80 kg lesser than the hybrid variant, and also comes with a larger fuel tank with a capacity of 60 litres compared to the 2.5 HEV’s 50 litres. That said, the hybrid is of course the more economical of the two, with its fuel consumption rated at just 4 L/100 km versus the 2.5V’s 6.6 L/100 km.

Aside from the powertrain though, both variants are very similarly equipped, with standard equipment including the 18-inch wheels, LED headlamps and daytime-running lights, LED combination tail lamps, the twin 12.3-inch displays inside, a head-up display, as well as the nine-speaker JBL sound system.

It also comes packed with creature comfort niceties, such as wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity, eight-way powered front seats with seat ventilation, rear air-con vents, black leather upholstery, powered steering wheel adjustments, a wireless charging pad, built-in front and rear dashcams, as well as the Toyota Safety Sense advanced driver assistance suite.

That said, as the cheaper option, the 2024 Toyota Camry 2.5V does still miss out on a couple of items, including the panoramic sunroof, having only a dual-zone climate control instead of tri-zone like the hybrid, and most notably, the lack of the power reclining “tauke” seats at the back, alongside the dedicated control panel in the centre armrest.

Does the RM27K cheaper price tag justify the reduced kit? Or would you rather go for the more high-tech, better equipped model and hope that the fuel savings make up for the price difference down the road? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
