Alongside the Mazda CX-60, Bermaz Motor is also showcasing the Mazda CX-80 at KLIMS 2024 in what the company calls a “preview”, hinting at a launch here in Malaysia soon. This all-new model is essentially a stretched version of the CX-60, designed to accommodate seven passengers, whereas the CX-60 is a five-seater.
Measuring 4,995 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,710 mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 3,120 mm, the Mazda CX-80 is taller, longer, and has a longer wheelbase than the Mazda CX-60, which is a given since it has to fit an extra row of seats.
Design-wise, if you look at the Mazda CX-80 and the CX-60 side-by-side, you will barely find any differences except that the CX-80 is physically larger than the CX-60. The display unit here also sports an additional charging flap as it is a PHEV, although it’s also available for the CX-60 too.
The same can also be said for the interior, with the CX-80 sharing the same layout as the CX-60, except that it has a third-row of seats whereas the CX-60 has only two rows.

With Mazda going upmarket and competing against premium brands, the interior reflects the signature minimalist Mazda aesthetic with leather upholstery and open-pore wooden veneers located throughout the interior.
Bermaz did not reveal any specifics regarding the powertrain of the Mazda CX-80. However, the preview unit is a PHEV. Referencing the Japanese market CX-80, it offers a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder PHEV powertrain making 328 hp and 500 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox driving the rear wheels.
There is also a 3.3-litre straight-six powertrain, offered in both petrol and diesel configurations. However, considering that Malaysia uses a displacement-based road tax structure, a CX-80 with this engine might not be the most wallet-friendly option. Hence, the smaller displacement 2.5-litre PHEV powertrain might be the more likely choice for the Malaysian market.
With its classy and premium “Jinba Ittai” design, the Mazda CX-80 has the potential to shake up the premium SUV segment if it were to be launched in Malaysia. The question is, will you opt for the usual German marques or something different like the Mazda CX-80?
