While Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 are making waves, the brand is already gearing up for its next electric offering: the Ioniq 9. This three-row all-electric SUV, previewed a few years ago as the SEVEN Concept, breaks the numerical sequence and represents a leap into a new segment for the brand.
The “9” in Ioniq 9 signifies its position as the largest vehicle in Hyundai’s Ioniq line-up, marking the company’s first foray into the large SUV EV segment. It’s based on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that underpins the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, as well as the Kia EV9 which it’ll likely share most of its specifications with.
With its “Aerosthetic” design, Hyundai says the Ioniq 9 blends aerodynamic efficiency and aesthetic appeal, likely echoing the retrofuturistic styling of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. Hyundai drew inspiration from the sleek lines and spacious interiors of boats for the Ioniq 9’s design.
From the teaser images, we can make out a single-curved roofline and an elongated wheelbase, hinting at a spacious cabin for passengers in all three rows. Roof rails also appear to be present, adding to the Ioniq 9’s practicality.
The Ioniq 9’s front headlights feature Parametric Pixels, a signature element of the Ioniq line-up. The taillights appear to have a vertical orientation.
Hyundai is keeping the Ioniq 9’s powertrain details under wraps for now. However, given its shared platform with the Kia EV9, we expect similar performance. The dual-motor EV9, for instance, delivers 380 hp and 700 Nm to all four wheels, achieving a 0-100 km/h time of 5.2 seconds. It achieves a range of 505 km (WLTP) from its 99.8 kWh battery.
Hold onto your seats, folks, because Hyundai is about to unleash the Ioniq 9 next month, and we can’t wait to see what this electric behemoth has in store!
