McLaren has unveiled the W1, the successor to the iconic P1 and F1, signalling a new era of performance for the brand’s legendary ‘1’ lineage.
Powering the W1 is an all-new, in-house developed V8 engine, dubbed the MHP-8. This V8 produces 928 hp on its own and is also McLaren’s highest power-per-litre engine at 233 hp. Furthermore, the V8 is combined with an electric motor producing 347 hp. Altogether, the total output of the W1 is 1275 hp and 1340 Nm of torque.
With a weight of just 1,399 kg, McLaren claims the W1 has a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio of 911 hp/tonne. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reach 300 km/h in under 12.7 seconds. The W1’s top speed is electronically limited to 350 km/h.

The W1’s exterior design prioritises aerodynamic efficiency, drawing inspiration from Formula 1. It utilises ground effect to channel airflow beneath the car to create downforce and enhance grip. The rear spoiler extends 300mm in race mode, generating over 1000 kg of downforce.
Together with the powertrain and aerodynamics, McLaren says the W1 is the fastest-accelerating and fastest-lapping road-legal McLaren ever. It is quicker than a Speedtail to 300 km/h in a straight line and three seconds quicker than a McLaren Senna on McLaren’s reference track.
Production is limited to 399 units worldwide, each with a starting price of £2.0 million (approx. RM11.2 million) before any MSO personalization options. Despite the extraordinary price tag, demand has been overwhelming, and all 399 units are already spoken for.
With the launch of the McLaren W1 and the Porsche Mission X and the Ferrari LaFerrari successor (the F250) reportedly in the works, could we be witnessing the dawn of a new holy trinity of hypercars?
