All-new Audi A5 unveiled as a replacement the petrol-powered A4

Audi has unveiled the all-new A5, offering both sedan and Avant (wagon) body styles in its lineup. This new generation positions itself as a competitor within the mid-size luxury car segment, traditionally occupied by models like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. The high-performance S5 variant has also been revealed alongside the standard A5.

This next-generation model effectively replaces the outgoing A4 in the brand’s lineup. Built on a new platform specifically designed for combustion engines, the A5 boasts a range of significantly revised powertrains. This shift in naming conventions aligns with Audi’s recently announced branding strategy for future models. Under this plan, odd numbers will designate petrol-powered vehicles, while even numbers will represent electric vehicles.

The new A5 exhibits a clear design evolution from its predecessor, the A4. While not a radical departure, the A5 adopts a more modern aesthetic. This is achieved through a more aggressively sloped hood, updated headlights with a potentially more contemporary style, and a significantly wider grille for a bolder overall presence. The new A5 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels. Upgrading to the S line trim or opting for the high-performance S5 model increases the wheel size to 19 inches. Additionally, 20-inch alloy wheels are available as part of the options list. The A5 also features flush-fitting door handles, which contribute to a sleeker and more aerodynamic overall design.

The rear design of the new A5 exhibits a stylistic connection to the Audi Q6 e-tron SUV, particularly with the adoption of a full-width taillight bar. Notably, the exhaust tips appear to be functional as well. The high-performance S5 variant receives distinct visual enhancements to differentiate itself from the standard A5. These include a more sculpted front bumper with enlarged air intakes for improved engine cooling, unique alloy wheel designs that contribute to a sportier aesthetic, and quad exhaust pipes at the rear for a more assertive look.

The new Audi A5 offers a range of powertrain options to suit various driving needs. The entry-level model features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine generating 150 hp and front-wheel drive. A variant of the same engine with 204 hp is available for those seeking more power and all-wheel-drive capability. Additionally, a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine producing 204 hp is also in the option.

The performance-oriented Audi S5 Sedan and Avant version stands out with a new powertrain option. It utilizes a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, delivering 367 hp and 550 Nm. It provides a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds and maxes out at 250 km/h. A plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of 100 km will follow next year.

The new Audi A5’s interior design appears similar to the one found in the recently unveiled Q6 e-tron. The new A5 boasts a driver-focused cockpit featuring a large, curved panel on the dashboard. This panel integrates an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster for clear driving information and a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system for control over various vehicle functions. Passengers can further personalize their experience with an optional 10.9-inch passenger display, allowing them to stream videos during journeys.
