Padel, the new sport that’s taking the world by storm

You probably would’ve already heard about padel even if you’re living under a rock – it’s only the fastest-growing sport in the world, with over 25 million players across 110 countries today, including Malaysia.

But in case you’ve somehow completely missed out on the hype, here’s a quick rundown: Padel is a racquet sport invented in the 1960s, and frequently described as a crossover between tennis and squash.

It’s typically played as doubles in an enclosed artificial turf court, and has been described as more of a laid-back and casual environment compared to other racquet sports, making it a perfect activity for social gatherings – but it can be just as exciting as any other competitive sport too, just watch one of the many matches played at the World Padel Tour!

And that’s why Volvo Car Malaysia has long championed the sport ever since it first arrived on our shores, with its first Koppla customer sporting event last year at the ASCARO Padel & Social Club, the first Padel club in Malaysia.

Volvo Car Malaysia Head of Marketing and Public Relations, Patricia Yaw shared: “We at Volvo Car Malaysia see a lot of synergy with the sport due to its focus on people, a lifestyle-driven experience and constant technological innovation.

“We’re proud to be synonymous with this growing, vibrant sport that has strong historic roots and an exciting, modern future, just like our new electric cars and fully electric ambitions.”

Malaysia’s first-ever official and largest padel tournament

The Volvo Padel Open 2024, happening from 8-15 June 2024, will see participants compete in four different categories in Volvo Padel Open 2024 – Intermediate, Open, Women’s, and Wildcard – for a slice of the RM100,000 prize purse.

The open qualifiers will take place at all three venues on 8-9 June 2024, while the Grand Finale event will be held at ASCARO Padel & Social Club on 15 June 2024.

Participants will need to sign up together as a doubles team, and all players will be assessed upon registration to determine their skill level and eligible category. The registration fee is RM200 per team, but Volvo Car Malaysia is also offering a special rate of only RM100 for any team where at least one player is a Volvo owner.

And if you’re still new to the sport, don’t worry! Volvo Car Malaysia will also be hosting a coaching clinic event as part of the Volvo Padel Open 2024 on 1-2 June 2024, specifically for the Open and Women’s categories at all three partner padel courts.

Speaking on the partnership with Volvo Cars Malaysia to host the first-ever padel tournament in Malaysia, ASCARO Padel & Social Club Managing Director, Daniel Liljekvist said, “Volvo Car Malaysia is our first court and automotive partner and today we are elevating our partnership to co-host the Volvo Padel Open. Partnerships like this not only help elevate the experience for our players and customers, but also allow us to stay true to our mission of championing the vibrant community and style surrounding this growing sport.”

Padelground Director, Oliver Cheah added, “The Volvo Padel Open is our chance to showcase the sport and its young, vibrant lifestyle through our brand-new courts at KLGCC. As interest continues to grow among a new generation of socialites, trendsetters, fitness enthusiasts, and personalities on the rise, we hope to inspire more players to embrace a sport where fun and fitness converge effortlessly.”

PadelKu Operations Director, Charl Hermus Marais commented: “As padel gains momentum as the world’s fastest-growing sport, we’re seizing the chance to elevate the game. Our goal is to bring the excitement of padel to Malaysia, grooming new players and upping the ante. The Volvo Padel Open is a perfect opportunity for both beginners and skilled players alike to hone their techniques and tactics through the competitive gameplay we champion.”
