Smart Concept #5 debuts – over 550km range, 800V, largest Smart ever

After the #1 and the #3, Smart is continuing on with another odd-numbered model in its series, the Smart #5 (or at least known as the Smart Concept #5 for the time being). It is Smart’s largest and latest offering today, which the company also claims to be its versatile model to date. Smart describes the Smart Concept #5 as a mid-size SUV.

After revealing the initial sketches of the car, Smart has now given us the full look of the Smart Concept #5 ahead of its global debut at the Beijing International Auto Show set to take place tomorrow. As the initial sketches suggest, the car explores a new design from Smart which is more boxy and upright.

The rugged look of the Smart Concept #5 is paired with some practical aspects as well, like its short front and rear overhangs. It also comes with a set of beefy off-road tyres, a roof light bar, and an integrated winch. It also has a folding rear step to allow easy roof access.

Smart has yet to share the full technical details of the Smart Concept #5, but the company has shared some interesting technical details. The car is an all-wheel drive (AWD) electric car and it has a nominal battery capacity of 100+ kWh, which is the largest ever for an electric vehicle from Smart. With that big battery, the Concept #5 can supposedly be driven for over 550km on a single charge.

Another first for a Smart electric vehicle on the Concept #5 would be the 800 V architecture that underpins it. With it, the Smart Concept #5 can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. No details on its AC charging capacity have been shared just yet.

Inside, the Smart Concept #5’s cabin features a 3-screen setup on the dashboard, which is unlike what the typical car would do. There is a twin-screen setup, but the centre head unit is paired with a screen for the front passenger instead. A smaller screen is used for the digital instrument cluster for the driver.

The steering wheel and the centre console of the Smart Concept #5 look very similar to what you would find in the Smart #1. What is slightly intriguing is what appears to be a gear selector on the centre console, although it may be a knob for a different control mechanism.

Shown with a glass roof in the official images, users will be able to view the “X” pocket knife on the roof of the Concept #5 from the inside. Also seen on the inside of the Concept #5 are “starry sky” like trims on the door panels.

The zero-gravity front passenger seat offers an innovative combination of comfort and safety. The seat features new airbag solutions, providing high safety in the event of a collision. Beyond safety, the seat integrates comfort features like heating, ventilation, massage functions and a leg rest.

Smart Europe GmbH CEO, Dirk Adelmann said, “For more than a quarter of a century, smart has made a significant impact by pioneering models and mobility solutions for the urban space and beyond. The smart Concept #5 is the most unexpected and versatile car that our brand has ever created. With this vehicle, we leave all boundaries behind and open up a new segment for customers in Europe and worldwide.”
